The Tigers are making a statement in Bronx
Thursday’s games have been excluded from the analysis, and the 84-62 Detroit Tigers visited the New York Yankees on Thursday night, looking to sweep a three-game series. The Tigers demolished the Yanks 12-2 in the opener and 11-1 in the middle game while hitting four home runs in the process.
Detroit has been inconsistent lately, going 5-5 in its previous 10 games overall. During that stretch, the Tigers have scored 63 runs on a .261/.331/.423 triple-slash, while their bullpen has amassed an underwhelming 4.46 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and a .264 batting average against. Detroit boasted the best record in the American League on Thursday morning, half a game ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Tarik Skubal will toe the rubber at loanDepot Park on Friday night. The 28-year-old left-hander is 13-4 with a shiny 2.10 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and 222/28 K/BB ratio in 28 starts (180 innings pitched) this season. He hasn’t allowed a single run over his previous two outings and 14 innings of work.

Tarik Skubal is having one of the most dominant seasons in the modern history of baseball, so I’m not going to overthink this game at all. The Marlins are slashing .225/.302/.376 with an 89 wRC+ against the southpaws in September (192 plate appearances). Hereof, I expect Skubal to put on another strong performance.
The Tigers are hitting .240/.327/.399 with a 102 wRC+ against the righties in September (213 PA). Even if Sandy Alcantara pitches well, the Tigers will get to someone from the Marlins’ shaky bullpen. Give me Detroit.
Over/Under Pick for Tigers vs. Marlins

I can only look at the under when it comes to the total. Tarik Skubal hasn’t allowed a single run in three of his previous four starts, and I noted how good he has been this season. On the other side, Sandy Alcantara has struggled for most of the season, but he’s improved lately, so I’m looking for a low-scoring affair when the Marlins host the Tigers on Friday night.
Of course, the line sits at seven runs. I can’t argue about it, given the starting duo in this clash. Four of Skubal’s last five starts and three of Alcantara’s previous five have seen fewer than eight runs on the scoreboard.
