Arizona Needs a Late Run
The Arizona Diamondbacks are not out of playoff contention yet. They are only fourth in the NL West, but their division is strong, and Arizona finds itself only 2.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot with about half a month of baseball to go. The road will not be easy; they end the season with a series against the Giants, Phillies, Dodgers and Padres, all teams that are above them in the standings.
In Friday's game against the Twins, the D-Backs missed an opportunity as they scored eight runs, but it was not enough as they took the loss. The Diamondbacks scored four runs in the top of the ninth to take an 8-6 lead, but gave up three runs in the bottom of the inning. Arizona got two hits and three RBIs from Gabriel Moreno, who is a 25-year-old catcher who continues to improve. Moreno bats cleanup for the D-Backs, and has added nine home runs and 36 RBIs while batting a strong .290 at the plate. Corbin Carroll is their top power hitter. The right fielder batted third on Friday and leads the team with 30 home runs to go with his 76 RBIs and 26 stolen bases.
Nabil Crismatt will make his fifth start of the season for Arizona. The 30-year old right hander has a 2-0 record to go with his 3.24 ERA and 17 to 7 strikeout to walk ratio. In his last start, Crismatt gave up four runs in four innings in a loss to the Giants.

Twins Wait for Elimination
The Minnesota Twins are not yet mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, but they are next on the chopping block as the only team behind them in the American League standings is the White Sox. Minnesota is 14.5 games outside of the final Wild Card spot and will likely be eliminated from the Wild Card race over the next week. They are still scrappy and can play the spoiler role, as evidenced by their ninth-inning comeback to hand Arizona a loss on Friday.
Kody Clemens had a five-RBI game in Friday's win out of the eighth spot in the lineup as their first baseman. He is a 29-year-old who is in his first season with the Twins after spending his last three years with the Phillies as a spot player. This year, he has career highs of 19 home runs and 48 RBIs. Byron Buxton is their leadoff hitter; he is leading the way statistically for the Twins with 31 home runs and 76 RBIs while batting .274 on the year. Trevor Larnach took the DH spot and batted third on Friday. He is now up to 16 home runs and 58 RBIs this season.
Bailey Ober will make his 25th start of the season as a 30-year-old right-hander. He has a 5-7 record, with the team going 2-3 overall in his last five starts. His ERA is 5.08 with a 105 to 28 strikeout to walk ratio. In his last start, Ober gave up one run in five innings in a win over the Royals.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Minnesota Twins picks and predictions
Moneyline Pick for Diamondbacks vs. Twins
- Diamondbacks (5 units)
The motivations for these two teams are so drastically different, it will lead us to believe that the D-Backs will grab a win on Sunday. Arizona is truly fighting for its playoff lives, with a real chance to grab a Wild Card spot if it can get hot down the stretch. Meanwhile, Minnesota knows it will be watching the postseason from home. Ober is starting for Minnesota, and even if he has been in the starting rotation all year, he has still not been impressive. Ober has a losing record and an ERA over 5.00, and will give up too many runs against Arizona here. The Diamondbacks are starting Crismatt, who has looked strong in his limited appearances. Arizona grabs an afternoon win before leaving town.
Take the Diamondbacks to win.
Over/Under Pick for Diamondbacks vs. Twins
- Over (4 units)
As mentioned above, Minnesota is starting Ober, who is second on the team in innings pitched, but that is only due to a lack of options for Minnesota. Ober is having a modest season; he can show flashes of strong performances, but his ERA is still north of 5.00 for the season. Ober gave up four or more runs in two of his last three games, including a game against the White Sox, who are the worst team in the American League. Crismatt has looked solid lately, but the 30-year-old has only pitched in five games this season. He is not a rookie, and has not been given many opportunities for a reason, expect a high scoring game here.
Take the over.
