Arizona Trying to Earn Road Victory in Interleague Action

Arizona snapped a three-game skid as they beat the Giants in the finale of their series on the road on Wednesday. The Diamondbacks entered Friday 73-74 on the year and stood fourth in the NL West, 9.5 games behind the Dodgers for the top spot. They were three games behind the Mets for the final wild card spot in the National League playoff picture. Against San Francisco on Wednesday, Arizona totaled 11 hits in the game as Geraldo Perdomo (run, two RBI), Gabriel Moreno, Alek Thomas (run) and Tim Tawa (two runs, RBI) each picking up two. Perdomo (his 18th) homered in the contest for the Diamondbacks. Eduardo Rodriguez (8-8) earned the win as he threw 6.1 innings, allowing no runs on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts, before handing things off to the bullpen.

Ryne Nelson gets the ball for Arizona as he makes his 31st appearance, 21st start, of the season in the middle game of this set. He is 7-3 with one save, a 3.48 ERA, a 1.051 WHIP, 36 walks and 118 strikeouts over 137 innings of work this season. Nelson didn’t factor in the decision in his last outing, which was a start at home against the Red Sox on Sunday. He threw six innings, allowing one run on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts in a game the Diamondbacks dropped 7-4. In his last three starts, Nelson has a 1-0 mark with a 2.50 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP, four walks and 13 strikeouts over 18 innings of work. Nelson makes his third career start against the Twins here. He is 0-2 with a 16.20 ERA, a 2.70 WHIP, no walks and eight strikeouts over 6.2 innings of work. Nelson took the loss in his lone career start at Target Field on August 5, 2023. He threw three innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts in a 12-1 Diamondbacks triumph.

Twins Folding as Regular Season Winds Down

Minnesota lost for the eighth time in 10 games as they were downed by the Angels in the rubber game of a set on the road Wednesday. The Twins entered Friday fourth in the AL Central with a 64-82 mark, leaving them 19.5 games behind the Tigers for the top spot. They were 14.5 games behind the Mariners for the final wild card spot in the AL playoff picture.  Against the Angels on Wednesday, Minnesota totaled six hits as Trevor Larnach and James Outman (run, RBI) each added a pair. Byron Buxton (his 31st) and Outman (his fourth) each went deep in the contest. The Twins were zero for seven with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base in the game. Taj Bradley threw 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts, but didn’t factor in the decision. Caleb Sands (3-4) took the loss in relief as he threw 1.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit with no walks or strikeouts.

Joe Ryan is on the mound for the Twins on getaway day as he makes his 29th appearance, 28th start, of the season. He is 13-8 with a 3.32 ERA, a 1.006 WHIP, 34 walks, 176 strikeouts and 12 hit batters over 157 innings of work on the year. Ryan took the loss in his last start, which came on the road against the Royals last Saturday. Diamondbacks vs. Twins Pick

Moneyline Pick for Diamondbacks vs. Twins

  • Twins -136 (4 units)

Neither team has been great lately, with Arizona dropping three of four entering Friday, while Minnesota had lost eight of its previous 10. Arizona has sputtered on the road this season, going 35-41 as the visiting squad. Nelson has been decent but in his two career outings against the Twins, he has been rocked into oblivion. Ryan struggled a bit in his last few outings but he has pitched well at Target Field in his career. Minnesota’s bats have failed to generate the kind of production one would have hoped but Arizona’s bullpen has crumbled down the stretch. Give the edge to the Twins here.

Over/Under Pick for Diamondbacks vs. Twins

  • Under 8.5 (4 units)

Arizona entered Friday having seen the over go 70-68-9 in their opening 147 games of the season. The Diamondbacks are sixth in the league in runs per game with 4.93, a number that slides down slightly to 4.69 runs per game on the road on the year. Arizona has an average total of 9.72 runs per game and that number slides down to 9.56 runs per game away from Chase Field. Minnesota entered Friday with the over posting a 69-68-9 mark in their opening 146 games of the year. The Twins are 23rd by averaging 4.23 runs per game, a number that bumps up to 4.35 runs per game at home. Minnesota has an average total of 9.03 runs per game on the season and that climbs to 9.34 runs per game at Target Field. With both teams likely looking to the future, this game winds up falling short of the number.
