The Athletics hope to avoid a third straight loss
The Athletics are coming off Wednesday’s 5-1 defeat at the St. Louis Cardinals. The A’s dropped a three-game series at Busch Stadium in St. Louis and recorded the fifth loss in their last six games overall. Last weekend, the A’s were swept by the Texas Rangers in a three-game set in Sacramento.
Over their last six outings, the Athletics have scored 24 runs on a .245/.290/.423 triple-slash, while their bullpen has recorded a pedestrian 6.41 ERA and 1.58 WHIP. The A’s accounted for 11 runs in an eight-run victory over the Cardinals this past Monday.
Mason Barnett is expected to toe the rubber at Angel Stadium on Friday night. The 24-year-old right-hander made his MLB debut last Saturday, allowing five earned runs on eight hits across four innings of work. Barnett has thrown 119 innings in Triple-A Las Vegas this season while notching a 6.13 ERA and 1.60 WHIP.
The Angels aim for their second straight series W
While the Athletics enjoyed a day off on Thursday, the Los Angeles Angels visited the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night. Thursday’s games have been excluded from the analysis, and the Angels were looking to sweep a three-game series against the Royals.
The Angels have won four of their previous five games overall. During that stretch, the Angels have scored 19 runs on a .199/.280/.343 slash line, while their bullpen has accounted for a sharp 2.35 ERA and 1.04 WHIP.
Jose Soriano is expected to take the mound on Friday night. The 26-year-old right-hander carries a 10-9 record with a 3.68 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 28 starts (161.1 innings pitched) this season. He hasn’t allowed a single run over his previous two starts and 12.2 innings of work.
Soriano is 1-2 with a 7.09 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in five career starts and two relief appearances against the Athletics. He’s already met the A’s three times this season, going 1-0 with a 4.34 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. The current A’s are 25-for-78 with eight doubles and six home runs against Soriano.
Athletics vs. Angels Pick
Spread Pick for Athletics vs. Angels
- Los Angeles Angels (4 units)
At the time of writing, the odds were unavailable, which means that the Athletics could decide to start J.T. Ginn (2-6; 5.17 ERA) instead of Mason Barnett. Anyway, I will take the Angels. Barnett pitched poorly in his MLB debut, and Ginn has struggled a lot lately.
Last Sunday, Ginn gave up five earned runs across six innings in a 9-6 loss to the Rangers. He’s recorded an ugly 7.24 ERA over his previous six starts and 27.1 innings of work.
Moreover, the Athletics' bullpen has struggled lately, whereas the Angels ‘pen has done a great job. Even if Jose Soriano starts to struggle, the Angels will have a chance to win this game.
- Over (4 units)
Jose Soriano hasn’t allowed a single run in three of his previous four starts. Over his last two outings, Soriano has surrendered just five hits and four walks through 12.2 innings. However, he gave up five earned runs on eight hits and a walk through 5.2 frames in a no-decision against the Athletics on August 17.
I’m backing Soriano to avoid a meltdown, but he won’t be able to shut the A’s down completely. As I noted, the Athletics are 25-for-78 against Soriano. Whoever gets the nod for the Athletics will allow a few runs, so I’m going with the over.
Seven of the last nine encounters between these two teams have produced runs in double digits.
