Orioles closing strong
The Baltimore Orioles have had a forgettable season, destined for last place in the AL East and out of the playoffs for the first time in three seasons. Still, the team is proving it still fights. They come into this series with wins in five of their last six games, including a 3-2 win over the Pirates on Thursday afternoon. The Orioles got a strong outing from starting pitcher Cade Povich. Povich went 5.2 innings and allowed five hits and two runs while striking out six. Dean Beavers singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh to make winners out of the O’s.
The Orioles were set to turn to veteran righty Dean Kremer in the series opener against the Blue Jays. Kremer is still recovering from a forearm issue and isn’t expected to return to the rotation until next week. Keegan Akin has been penned to serve as an opener for the O’s on Friday night. Akin has made 56 appearances this season, including as an opener three times. He is 4-4 on the season with an ERA of 3.20 and a WHIP of 1.35. He’s struck out 53 and walked 30 in 56.1 innings of work. He will give way to the Orioles’ pen by the third inning.
Key Injuries: SP Dean Kremer, 3B Jordan Westburg, RP Scott Blewett, and RP Carlos Tavera are out.
Jays still on top
The Toronto Blue Jays are heading into the home stretch of the 2025 regular season alone in first place in the AL East, and with a shot at earning the #1 seed in the American League playoffs. They hold a three-game lead over both the Red Sox and Yankees but haven’t helped their own cause, losing three of their last four games heading into Thursday afternoon’s series finale with the Houston Astros. The Blue Jays got a dominant performance from starter Kevin Gausman on Thursday afternoon and cruised to a 6-0 win. Gausman pitched a complete game shutout, striking out nine while allowing just two hits.
The Blue Jays have a three-game cushion with just 16 games left in the regular season after Thursday night’s game against the Astros. They’ll try to increase their lead on Friday night, sending veteran righty Max Scherzer to the hill. Scherzer is 5-3 on the season in 14 starts, including six quality starts. He has allowed 66 hits in 74.1 innings of work. Scherzer has given up 16 home runs and has an ERA of 4.36 and a WHIP of 1.16. He has walked 20 batters and struck out 70. The Blue Jays have won four of Scherzer’s last five starts. He is 3-0 with a 4.50 ERA in eight home starts.
Key Injuries: SP Alek Manoah, RP Nick Sandlin, RP Angel Bastardo, SS Bo Bichette, and RF Anthony Santander are out.
Orioles at Blue Jays Pick
Money line Pick for Orioles vs. Blue Jays
- Blue Jays ML (4 units)
The Blue Jays have been consistently excellent at home this year, coming into this contest 23 games over .500 in front of the home fans. Scherzer has fed off of that, posting a 3-0 mark at home this season in eight starts. He has also been backed by solid production, with the Jays winning four of Scherzer’s last five starts. The Orioles have a tough task ahead of them on Friday night with Kremer out of action. They’ll turn to an opener and have to patch together pitching the rest of the way. That will be difficult against a Jays team that is hitting nearly .270 overall. The Jays will inch closer to the AL East crown with a win on Friday night.
Take the Blue Jays with the money line.
Over/Under Pick for Orioles at Blue Jays
- Over (4 units)
The Blue Jays have gone over the number in three of Scherzer’s last five starts. As noted, they are hitting nearly .270 as a team this season and will square off against a bullpen game for the Orioles. The two teams have gone over the number in three of their four meetings this season.
Take the over.
