Baltimore Looking to Pick Up Win in Road Opener

Baltimore had dropped five straight and eight of nine before pounding the Giants in the rubber game of that set Saturday. The Orioles entered Sunday 61-75 and in the basement of the AL East, 17 games behind the Blue Jays for the top spot. They were 11 games behind the Mariners for the final wild card spot in the American League playoff picture. Against San Francisco Saturday, Baltimore rapped out 13 hits as Gunnar Henderson (run, RBI), Jeremiah Jackson (two runs, four RBI), Ryan Mountcastle (two runs, two RBI), Daniel Johnson (three runs) and Dylan Beavers (RBI) each picked up a pair. Mountcastle (his fifth), Jackson (his second) and Samuel Basallo (his first) each went deep in the win. Trevor Rogers (8-2) earned the win as he threw seven innings, allowing one run on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

Kyle Bradish makes his second start of the season here. He is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA, a 0.667 WHIP, no walks and 10 strikeouts. Bradish took the loss in his season debut, which came against the Red Sox at home Tuesday night. He threw six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts in a 5-0 Orioles defeat. Bradish, in his 63rd career major league start, pitches against the Padres for the first time here. As a result, he makes his first career start at Petco Park here. Bradish made six minor league starts with Single-A Aberdeen of the South Atlantic League, Double-A Chesapeake of the Eastern League and Triple-A Norfolk of the International League this season. Bradish is 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA, a 1.409 WHIP, eight walks and 25 strikeouts over 22 innings of work in those outings.

Padres Battling in NL West Chase

San Diego fell for the fifth time in seven games as they were hammered in the rubber game of their set with the Twins on Sunday. The Padres entered Sunday 76-61 and stood second in the NL West, 1.5 games behind the Dodgers for the top spot. They held the second wild card spot in the National League playoff picture, seven games clear of the Reds to remain in the playoff picture. Against Minnesota Sunday, San Diego finished with eight hits as Gavin Sheets was the lone player with two. The Padres went three of 14 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. David Morgan threw two innings, allowing no runs on one hit with no walks and two strikeouts, but didnโ€™t factor in the decision. Kyle Hart (3-3) took the loss as he allowed three runs on three hits with one walk and one strikeout in 1.1 innings of relief.

Dylan Cease is on the mound for the Padres as he makes his 28th start of the season in this contest. He is 6-11 with a 4.82 ERA, a 1.331 WHIP, 61 walks and 183 strikeouts over 142 innings of work on the year. Cease didnโ€™t factor in the decision in his last start, which came against the Mariners on the road Tuesday night. He threw 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts in a 7-6 Padres triumph. In his last three starts, Cease is 1-1 with a 7.82 ERA, a 1.82 WHIP, 11 walks and 14 strikeouts over 12.2 innings of work. Cease makes his seventh career start against the Orioles in this contest. He has a 3-1 record with a 3.82 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, 16 walks and 45 strikeouts over 35.1 innings of work against them. Cease is 12-11 with a 3.53 ERA, a 1.145 WHIP, 58 walks and 205 strikeouts over 163.1 innings in 28 career starts at Petco Park.

San Diego Padres ML (4 units)

Baltimore is playing out the string and has to be considered one of the most disappointing teams in the majors this season. Bradish pitched well in his first start of the season, though he did take the loss as Baltimore failed to score any runs in support of him. Cease has sputtered most of the year but has been better of late, going 3-1 with a 4.94 ERA and 30 strikeouts over 23.2 innings in five starts in August. The Padres are in the thick of the NL West race and need to stack some wins over weaker teams. San Diego is 43-22 at Petco Park while Baltimore is 30-38 on the road entering Sunday. Give the edge to the Padres in this contest.

Under (4 units)

Baltimore has seen the under post a 72-59-5 mark on the year heading into Sundayโ€™s action. The Orioles are 18th in the majors with 4.36 runs per game and that number falls to 3.93 runs per game away from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Baltimore has an average total of 9.29 runs per game, but that number drops to 8.72 runs per game on the road. San Diego entered Sunday night 21st in the majors with 4.25 runs per game while they allow an average of 3.85 runs per contest. That gives the Padres an average total of 8.10 runs a contest. They average 4.40 runs per game at home while allowing an average of 3.38 runs per game, giving them an average total of 7.78 runs per game at Petco Park. San Diego has seen the under post a 74-59-4 mark in their 137 games on the year. Petco Park has played in favor of the pitchers this season. Look for this one to wind up under the total as a result.
