The Orioles have nothing to play for

The Baltimore Orioles cannot wait for the season to end. They’ve lost three consecutive series against the Houston Astros, the Boston Red Sox, and the San Francisco Giants while winning just two of 11 games during that stretch.

Baltimore is dead last in the AL East. The Orioles have the second-worst record in the American League and trail the bottom wild card by 12 games. They will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2022. The O’s won 101 games in 2023 and 91 in 2024.

Tyler Wells is expected to toe the rubber at Petco Park on Tuesday night and make his season debut. The 31-year-old right-hander hasn’t pitched in the majors since April 12, 2024, due to an elbow injury. He’s logged six rehab starts and thrown 25.1 innings while posting a 2.49 ERA and 1.10 WHIP.

Wells has never met the Padres before. He’s 16-18 with a 4.06 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 95 career appearances in the big leagues (46 starts, 294.2 innings pitched). Five guys from this San Diego team have seen Wells before, combining for four singles in 13 at-bats.

The Padres hope to get back on track

The San Diego Padres have only won two of their previous seven games overall. Last week, the Padres lost a couple of three-game road series against the Seattle Mariners and the Minnesota Twins. Once more, the Padres are two games behind the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

San Diego holds the middle wild card in the National League. The Padres need their bullpen to bounce back from a rough patch. Over the last 10 days, San Diego’s relievers have recorded a pedestrian 5.84 ERA and 1.46 WHIP.

Yu Darvish is projected to get the starting call on Tuesday. The 39-year-old right-hander carries a 3-4 record with a troublesome 5.66 ERA and a solid 1.11 WHIP in 10 starts (47.2 IP) in 2025. He went 2-1 in August, posting a 4.88 ERA and 5.25 FIP in five starts and 24 innings of work.

Darvish is 0-2 with a 4.73 ERA in two career starts against Baltimore. Four guys from this Orioles team have seen Darvish before, combining for three singles and a double in 17 at-bats.

Baltimore Orioles vs. San Diego Padres Pick

It’s hard to say what we can expect from Tyler Wells. He’s pitched well in Triple-A, but this will be his first appearance in the big leagues in nearly 17 months. Wells could easily have a rough day in the office. I’m pretty sure that Wells won’t go deep into this game, and the Orioles bullpen cannot be trusted, so give me the Padres at the runline.

Yu Darvish has been inconsistent lately. He gave up four earned runs on four hits and a walk across four innings in a 4-3 loss at the Mariners last time out. I expect him to improve, as Darvish has only allowed one run over his last two starts at home (13 innings pitched). Also, the Padres bullpen should pitch better than it did last week.

Pick: San Diego Padres -1.5 (5 units)

The Total:

As I said, the Orioles' bullpen cannot be trusted. Over the past 10 days, it has amassed a 4.70 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and a .256 batting average against. The Orioles ‘pen has been shaky all season, whereas the Padres ‘pen has been outstanding for most of the year.

I’m looking for a high-scoring affair at Petco Park on Tuesday night. Both lineups have hit the righties well lately, and the Orioles will have to lean on their bullpen because Wells won’t go deep in his first start since April 2024.
