A losing season in Baltimore
After three consecutive winning seasons, the Baltimore Orioles (62-76) have stumbled in 2025. Their pitching has been the biggest issue, ranking in the bottom seven of Major League Baseball in strikeouts, WHIP, and ERA. Baltimore’s staff has struggled to finish innings, often leaving the bullpen overexposed.
Offensively, the Orioles have not done enough to offset their pitching woes. They sit 18th in runs per game at 4.3, 22nd in batting average at .242, and 12th in home runs with 165. The production has been sporadic, with Gunnar Henderson emerging as a bright spot with 16 home runs and 61 RBI.
Cade Povich (2-7, 5.04 ERA, 1.43 WHIP) is expected to get the start. The left-hander has been inconsistent in his rookie campaign, struggling with command and giving up damage in high-leverage spots. Baltimore will need a sharp outing from him to compete against San Diego’s balanced lineup.
Padres fighting to catch Dodgers
The San Diego Padres remain in the hunt for the NL West title, sitting second in the division and trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers by 2.5 games. With October aspirations, every contest matters as San Diego tries to gain ground.
The Padres have been built around elite pitching, and their numbers show it. They rank second in MLB in both ERA (3.64) and WHIP (1.20), while also sitting third in strikeouts per game at 7.04. The rotation has delivered 42 quality starts, and the defense has been among the league’s cleanest with only 63 errors, ninth-fewest in baseball.
Offensively, San Diego’s production has been streaky. They rank just 22nd in runs per game (4.24) but hold an eighth-best batting average at .252. Their OPS (.707) and home run total (119, ranking 29th) leave room for concern, but they have been able to manufacture runs with speed, ranking 18th in stolen bases with 90.
Nestor Cortes (2-3, 5.06 ERA) will take the ball on Wednesday. The left-hander has been serviceable but not dominant since joining San Diego. He has shown flashes of his 2022 form, but has also struggled to limit long balls. Facing a Baltimore team that relies on power, this start will test his ability to locate on the edges and pitch efficiently.
Pick: Padres Moneyline
San Diego has the superior pitching staff and is in much better form overall, while the Orioles have consistently struggled to string together runs against quality arms. Cortes doesn’t need to be perfect with the Padres’ bullpen backing him, and San Diego should bounce back at home after dropping the opener.
Pick: Over 8.5 Runs
Both pitchers enter with ERAs above 5.00, and each has shown vulnerability to big innings. Baltimore’s offense is inconsistent but has enough pop to challenge Cortes, while San Diego should be able to pressure Povich early and work into the Orioles’ shaky bullpen. The Padres’ lineup may lack home run power, but their ability to get on base and put the ball in play should lead to run production.
With the Padres chasing the Dodgers and Baltimore free to swing away as a spoiler, this contest projects as more of an offensive battle than the opener. Expect both sides to push the pace and the total to clear late.
