Interleague action wraps up on Sunday afternoon as the Toronto Blue Jays host the San Diego Padres in the finale of a three-game series. Both clubs entered the season with postseason aspirations, making every game before the All-Star break increasingly important as they jockey for Wild Card positioning.

Sunday's pitching matchup features two experienced veterans taking the mound, with Kevin Gausman getting the start for Toronto against Germán Márquez for San Diego. Both right-handers have established themselves throughout their careers, but they've taken different paths this season. Gausman continues to anchor the Blue Jays rotation with his swing-and-miss splitter and ability to work deep into games, while Márquez has looked to regain consistency after battling injuries over the past several years.

With two lineups capable of producing runs in bunches, this should be one of the more entertaining matchups on Sunday's MLB slate. Read on to find out where the betting value lies in our Blue Jays vs. Padres prediction. Get in on all the action with our free MLB picks.

Blue Jays looking to build momentum before the All-Star break

Toronto has remained firmly in the American League playoff picture thanks to a balanced roster that combines veteran leadership with young offensive talent.

The offense continues to revolve around Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who has once again established himself as one of the league's premier middle-of-the-order hitters. Guerrero's combination of power, plate discipline, and ability to drive the ball to all fields makes him one of the toughest outs in baseball, and he remains the catalyst for Toronto's lineup.

George Springer also remains a valuable veteran presence, bringing experience and on-base ability while setting the tone offensively.

Toronto's biggest strength is lineup depth. Rather than relying on one or two hitters, the Blue Jays feature quality bats throughout the order, making it difficult for opposing pitchers to navigate multiple trips through the lineup. That depth becomes especially valuable against a pitcher like Márquez, who has shown flashes of his former dominance but has also been vulnerable when his command slips. If Toronto can force him into hitter's counts early, the Blue Jays have enough power throughout the lineup to capitalize.

On the mound, Kevin Gausman gives Toronto a clear advantage. The veteran right-hander continues to rely on one of baseball's best split-finger fastballs, generating swings and misses against both left-handed and right-handed hitters. When Gausman is locating his fastball early, his splitter becomes nearly unhittable, allowing him to rack up strikeouts while limiting hard contact. His ability to consistently pitch into the sixth and seventh innings also helps preserve Toronto's bullpen, an important factor with the All-Star break approaching. Against a Padres lineup that features several aggressive hitters, Gausman's strikeout ability could become the deciding factor.

Padres possess star power capable of changing any game

San Diego remains one of the National League's most talented teams despite dealing with stretches of inconsistency throughout the first half of the season.

Everything starts with Fernando Tatis Jr., whose combination of elite athleticism, power, and speed makes him one of baseball's most dynamic players. Tatis is capable of changing a game with one swing or one stolen base, forcing opposing pitchers to remain cautious every time he steps into the batter's box. Manny Machado continues to anchor the middle of the lineup with his veteran leadership and run-producing ability. Even when he isn't hitting home runs, Machado consistently delivers quality at-bats and remains one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball.

One of San Diego's biggest developments has been the continued emergence of Jackson Merrill, who has become a key contributor both offensively and defensively. His ability to hit for average while providing extra-base power has given the Padres another dangerous option in the heart of the order. The Padres have the offensive talent to compete with anyone, but consistency has occasionally been an issue. Against elite starting pitchers, they've sometimes struggled to string together multiple quality at-bats in the same inning.

That challenge becomes even greater against Gausman, whose splitter has frustrated hitters throughout his career. On the mound, Germán Márquez remains an intriguing veteran.  When healthy, Márquez has shown the ability to generate ground balls and induce weak contact while mixing an effective fastball-slider combination. However, command has occasionally been an issue, particularly against disciplined lineups that force him into deeper counts. Toronto's patient offensive approach could create problems if Márquez falls behind hitters and is forced to challenge them over the middle of the plate. If San Diego is going to win this matchup, Márquez will need to keep the Blue Jays from producing big innings while relying on the Padres' offense to take advantage of scoring opportunities against Gausman.

Blue Jays vs. Padres Picks

  • Blue Jays Moneyline

Toronto has the advantage in the starting pitching matchup, and that is the biggest factor entering Sunday. Gausman has consistently proven he can neutralize quality lineups, while Toronto's offense has enough depth to take advantage of mistakes from Márquez. Playing at home also gives the Blue Jays an edge, particularly if Gausman can work deep into the game and hand a late lead to the bullpen.

  • Total Pick: Under 8.0 Runs (2 Units)

Both starting pitchers are capable of limiting damage, and this projects as a tightly contested game between two postseason-caliber clubs. Gausman's strikeout ability should keep San Diego from generating consistent offense, while Márquez has enough experience to avoid a complete collapse if he's locating his pitches effectively. With two veteran starters expected to control the early innings, this matchup leans toward a lower-scoring affair.
