Boston Slips to Third
The Boston Red Sox shared second place in the AL East with the Yankees earlier in the week, but have now narrowly fallen back to third in the division. The Sox are 3.5 games behind the division-leading Blue Jays, and just a half game behind the Yankees in second place in the division. The most important metric for the Red Sox is likely the Wild Card standings, as they currently have the second Wild Card spot with a comfortable 4.5 game cushion.
The Sox just won two of three at home against the Guardians in Fenway. This was a big series victory, as the Guardians are also in the Wild Card chase as we head into mid-September. They won the first two games of the series, before falling 8-1 in the series finale, missing the sweep. The one run was scored by Nick Sogard with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Sogard is just a spot player, as he has no homers and just four RBIs on the season. The Red Sox will be without their star rookie in this game, as Roman Anthony is on the 10-day IL with an oblique injury. Trevor Story will still be available; the veteran shortstop has 23 home runs and 88 RBIs on the season.
Lucas Giolito will make his 23rd start of the season as a 31-year-old right-hander. He has a strong 10-2 record, with the team winning in each of his last four starts. His ERA is 3.38 to go with 105 strikeouts to 43 walks. In his last game, Giolito gave up one run in six innings in a win over the Pirates.
Diamondbacks Win Last Two Series
The Arizona Diamondbacks are stuck in the difficult NL West, but are still competing despite trading away one of their top players back at the deadline. Arizona won each of its last two series against strong teams by taking two of three on the road against the Dodgers and at home against the Rangers. Arizona is still 8.5 games out of the top spot in the NL West, and 5.5 games outside of the final playoff spot in the National League.
The Diamondbacks have momentum, but still a long way to go to sniff the postseason. They just won two of three at home against the Rangers; they dropped the first game but bounced back to win each of the final two matchups. In their last game of the series, the D-Backs won a low-scoring game 2-0 behind an RBI single from Gabriel Moreno to help lead their way to the win. Moreno is their 25-year-old catcher who now has 31 RBIs to go with seven home runs on the year. Ketel Marte is their top offensive player; the second baseman was an All-Star this season with 25 home runs and 64 RBIs.
Brandon Pfaadt will make his 29th start of the season as a 26-year-old right-hander. He has a 12-8 record, but the team has lost in two of his last three starts. His ERA is 5.33 to go with 122 strikeouts against 33 walks. In his last start, Pfaadt gave up four runs in four innings in a loss to the Dodgers.
Boston Red Sox vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Pick
Moneyline pick for Red Sox vs. Diamondbacks
- Diamondbacks (4 units)
Records can be misleading in the MLB, as the D-Backs have competed in the NL West all season with the powerful Dodgers and Padres. Arizona has been strong as of late; they won each of their last two series against the Dodgers and Rangers, and even split a four-game series against the best team in baseball before that against the Brewers. Arizona is starting Pfaadt, and he is one of their most reliable starters on the season as he has a winning record with his strong 122-33 strikeout-walk ratio. Boston will be slightly deflated without their star rookie on the field, and Arizona will grab the win here.
Take the Diamondbacks to win.
Over/Under Pick for Red Sox vs. Diamondbacks
- Over (4 units)
Neither team is sending out a pitcher who has been lighting the world on fire recently, and these teams will score enough runs to push this over the number on Saturday. Pfaadt is on the mound for Arizona. He is a veteran starter, but has given up a combined ten runs over his last two games. This included the six earned runs he gave up against the Brewers in just 2.2 innings. The Red Sox and the D-Backs are both in the hunt for the postseason and will not play conservatively. The Red Sox went over in each of their last three games, and will go over again here.
Take the over.
