Red Sox Trying to Get on Track

Boston dropped their third straight and their fifth in the last six games as they were dumped by the Yankees Thursday. The Red Sox entered Friday 9-16 and sat in the basement of the AL East, seven games behind the Yankees for the top spot. Against the Yankees Thursday, Boston finished with four hits with no player having more than one. Carlos Narvaez (his first) went deep for the Red Sox in the loss. Payton Tolle threw six innings, allowing one run on three hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts, but didnโ€™t factor in the decision. Danny Couloumbe (0-1) took the loss in relief as he allowed three runs on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning of work.

Garrett Crochet takes the hill as he makes his sixth start of the season for the Red Sox here. He is 2-3 with a 7.88 ERA, a 1.625 WHIP, nine walks and 30 strikeouts over 24 innings of work on the year. Crochet took the loss in his last start, which came against the Tigers at home Sunday. He threw five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in a 6-2 Red Sox loss. In his last three starts, Crochet is 1-2 with an 11.77 ERA, a 2.308 WHIP, seven walks and 15 strikeouts over 13 innings of work. Crochet makes his sixth career appearance, fourth start, against the Orioles here. He is 1-1 with a 1.64 ERA, a 0.682 WHIP, two walks and 28 strikeouts over 22 innings of work against them. Crochet is 1-0 with a 1.20 ERA, a 0.733 WHIP, one walk and 17 strikeouts over 15 innings of work in three appearances, two starts, at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Baltimore Looking to Prevail in Charm City

Baltimore took two of three from the Royals on the road for a rare series win in the opening month of the year. The Orioles improved to 12-13 on the year and stood third in the AL East entering Friday, four games behind the Yankees for the top spot. Against Kansas City Wednesday, Baltimore totaled 11 hits as Leody Taveras (run, RBI), Colton Cowser (run) and Dylan Beavers each had two. Pete Alonso (his third) and Coby Mayo (his second) each went yard for the Orioles in the win. Chris Bassitt (1-2) earned the win as he threw 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Anthony Nunez fanned two in a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first save.

Trevor Rogers is on the hill as he makes his sixth start of the season for the Orioles in this contest. He is 2-2 with a 4.08 ERA, a 1.326 WHIP, eight walks and 25 strikeouts over 28.2 innings of work this season. Rogers took the loss in his last start, which came against the Guardians Sunday on the road. He threw five innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts in an 8-4 Baltimore defeat. In his last three starts, Rogers is 0-2 with a 6.32 ERA, a 1.532 WHIP, three walks and 17 strikeouts over 15.2 innings of work. Rogers makes his sixth career start against the Red Sox here. He is 1-2 with a 2.13 ERA, a 1.145 WHIP, six walks and 27 strikeouts over 25.1 innings of work against them. Rogers is 6-3 with a 2.07 ERA, a 0.947 WHiP, 17 walks and 61 strikeouts over 69.2 innings of work in 11 career starts at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Red Sox vs. Orioles Pick

Moneyline Pick for Red Sox vs. Orioles

  • Orioles -110 (4 units)

Baltimore had won two of three entering Friday while Boston had dropped five of their previous six games. There are growing reports that Alex Cora's seat is getting warmer by the day. Crochet has sputtered in the first month of the year. His numbers have been rough as he has hit a league-high four batters in addition to his ugly ERA and WHIP peripherals. Baltimore is no great shakes offensively but they have been a little better of late. Rogers has pitched well against the Red Sox in his career and was a solid addition to the Baltimore rotation. With the way the Red Sox are awful in all facets right now, you have to fade them here. Take Baltimore at home.

Over/Under Pick for Red Sox vs. Orioles

  • Over 7.5 (4 units)

Boston went into Friday having seen the under post a 13-12 mark in their 25 games this season. The Red Sox are 26th in the majors in runs per game with 3.68 on the season and they have an average total of 8.24 runs per contest. On the road, Boston averages 4.17 runs per game and has an average total of 9.42 runs per game away from Fenway Park. Baltimore has seen the over post a 15-10 mark on the year heading into Fridayโ€™s action. The Orioles are 15th in the majors with 4.44 runs per game and that number jumps to 4.83 runs per game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Baltimore has an average total of 9.04 runs per game but that number rockets to 9.50 runs per game at home. With both pitchers sputtering a bit in the first month of the year, look for this game to wind up over the mark.
