The Boston Red Sox (37–48) head to Angel Stadium in Anaheim on Saturday to take on the Los Angeles Angels (36–52). It’s been a rough season for both clubs, with each team spending more time trying to stop the bleeding than building momentum. With the Fourth of July weekend setting the stage, both sides will be looking to turn the page, if only for a day, and come away with a much-needed win. Los Angeles Form & Recent Results

Los Angeles heads into Friday’s series opener against the Red Sox in a rough patch, having lost three straight and dropping three of its last five games overall. That skid was capped by a sweep at the hands of the Mariners in Seattle, a series where the Angels struggled to generate much consistent offense. Their most recent loss, a 1–0 defeat on the road Thursday, was a perfect example of how thin their margin has been lately. First baseman Nolan Schanuel was one of the few bright spots, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, but the team as a whole managed just four hits and four total bases, never really putting together the kind of rally needed to flip such a low-scoring game.

Even with the recent slump, the Angels still have a few key contributors carrying the load this season. Shortstop Zach Neto has been their top power threat, leading the team with 18 home runs, while center fielder Mike Trout isn’t far behind with 17. When it comes to driving in runs, right fielder Jo Adell has been their most productive bat, pacing the club with 45 RBIs. Schanuel has also been a steady presence at the plate, leading Los Angeles in batting average at .265. On the pitching and defensive side, the Angels have at least kept games manageable lately, allowing an average of 3.6 runs over their last five contests. Now, with the Fourth of July matchup back home in Anaheim, they’ll be looking to use that recent run prevention, and a boost from the home crowd, to finally snap the losing streak against a Boston team that’s been struggling as well.

Boston Form & Recent Results

Boston comes into this matchup trying to shake off some rough losses, having dropped their last two games. Still, the bigger picture isn’t all negative, since they had managed to win three of their previous five before Friday. Those wins were built at home, including one victory over the Nationals and two important ones against their rival Yankees, showing they can put together strong performances when things are clicking. However, that momentum took a hit on Wednesday in a 10–2 home loss to Washington, a game where the Red Sox never really got in control.

Even in that defeat, first baseman Willson Contreras was one of the few bright spots, going 2-for-4 and scoring a run. Contreras has been Boston’s most consistent power threat this season, leading the team with 18 home runs, while left fielder Jarren Duran sits next with 12. Contreras has also been the main run producer, pacing the team with 53 RBIs, and he’s been their best pure hitter as well, leading the Red Sox with a .283 batting average. Offensively, Boston hasn’t been overwhelming lately, averaging just 3.6 runs per game over their last five, so they’ll be counting on a strong outing from Sonny Gray on Saturday to set the tone and give them a clear path to a win over the Angels.

Key Stats

  • Boston’s Willson Contreras this season: 18 HRs, 53 RBI, .283 AVG

Boston vs. Los Angeles Picks and Prediction

Boston is set to hand the ball to right-hander Sonny Gray in Anaheim. He’s been outstanding this season, posting a 9–1 record with a 2.69 ERA, and he’s consistently done a great job working efficiently and keeping hitters off balance. The Angels will counter with left-hander Sam Aldegheri, who comes in at 3–3 with a 4.85 ERA on the year. Gray’s ability to get quick outs and avoid big innings has been a big part of his success, and Boston will be counting on him to set the tone early. If he can jump ahead in counts, keep traffic off the bases, and limit hard contact in the first few innings, he’ll give the Red Sox a strong chance to control the game from the start. Final Score Prediction, Boston Red Sox win 3-2.
