Chicago needs better play on the mound

The Chicago Cubs open the National League Division Series with a six-run loss to Milwaukee. The Cubs gave up six runs in the first inning and never recovered. Chicago started Matthew Boyd on just three days' rest, and that backfired on the left-hander. Chicago's bullpen had 7.1 innings of work and needs their starter on Monday to work deep into the game; otherwise, their arms will be tired in Game 3.

Chicago hit three solo home runs in the opening game loss to Milwaukee. Ian Happ, Michael Busch, and Nico Hoerner each went deep for the Cubs. The Cubs left only six runners on base, but that was due to the fact that they collected only six hits, and solo homers produced all their runs. Despite having a solid season that was shortened due to injuries, Kyle Tucker is batting just .214 in the postseason, while the rest of the lineup has performed well. The Cubs have a .238 team batting average with a .426 slugging percentage in the postseason.

Milwaukee opened its postseason with a bang

The Milwaukee Brewers jumped on the Chicago Cubs for six runs in the first inning of their opening game of the National League Division Series. This explosion of runs in the first inning of Game 1, came after Milwaukee scored four runs or fewer in each of the final nine games of the regular season and had won only two of its last 11 playoff games, with more than four runs scored in only one of those 13. However, this time, the Brewers had six runs on the board after just one inning.

Milwaukee pounded out 13 hits against Chicago's pitching. Jackson Chourio had three hits and three RBI before leaving late with hamstring tightness. Brice Turang and William Contreas each had two hits and one RBI apiece. Milwaukee ace Freddy Peralta pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out 9 and walking 3. Peralta did not have his best stuff, but was staked to a 6-run lead after one inning and did not have a great deal of pressure on his shoulders.

Brewers vs. Cubs Pick

Spread Pick for Cubs vs. Brewers

  • Milwaukee Brewers -122 (4 units)

The starting pitchers will be both southpaws. Aaron Ashby is more of a reliever for the Brewers, so this will likely be a bullpen game. Shota Imanaga goes for hte Cubs. The overall work by Milwaukee’s pitching staff was better than that of Chicago in game one. The Brewers pen gave up one run in 3.1 innings, while starter Freddy Peralta allowed only 2 runs across 5.2 innings. This matchup is very difficult to call as the two teams are 7-7 through 14 games head-to-head this season, including the opening game of the series. The Brewers have Jackson Chourio, who had three hits in Game 1, listed as day-to-day due to tightness in his hamstring. The Cubs are without catcher Miguel Amaya, but they played most of the season without their starting catcher. Chicago showed its power with three home runs in the first game, but could not do any other damage to Milwaukee's pitching. The Cubs' pitching gave up far too much, allowing six runs in the first inning and nine overall. The Brewers will use that momentum to help them extend their lead in the series to 2-0 with a victory on Monday.

Over/Under Pick for Brewers vs. Cubs

  • Over 8 (4 units)
