Can the bats help Fedde?
The White Sox offense has been the primary issue across the board. Chicago came into Friday dead last in Major League Baseball with a .195 team batting average and ranked near the bottom in nearly every meaningful offensive category. The White Sox were averaging just under 3.2 runs per game, which has made it extremely difficult to support even decent pitching performances.
Erick Fedde has been one of the few positives. He entered this start with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP, but his 0-3 record tells the story of how little help he has received. In his three starts this season, the White Sox have scored just three total runs while he has been on the mound. That lack of run support has completely masked what has been a strong start to the year for Fedde.
The bullpen has also been an issue, entering the series ranked 26th in baseball with a 5.69 ERA. Even when the starters do their job, the late innings have often undone their work. Still, if Fedde can continue to deliver quality innings, the White Sox will remain a team that can provide value in underdog spots where the price becomes inflated.
Severino struggling
The Athletics have been more competitive than many expected early in the season. While this roster is not loaded with talent, the group has found ways to stay around .500 and remain in games. Offensively, the Athletics came into Friday hitting .234 as a team, which ranked 18th in the league, and they were averaging 4.1 runs per game. Those numbers are not dominant, but they are noticeably stronger than what Chicago has produced.
Luis Severino is expected to take the ball, and he has not been at his best to start the season. The Athletics had gone just 1-3 in his starts entering this matchup, and he has yet to consistently find his rhythm. Severino also had notable struggles in home settings last season, which is something to consider in a ballpark that can play hitter-friendly at times.
There is also some concerning history in this matchup. Active White Sox hitters are batting .309 against Severino in their careers. Andrew Benintendi has had the most success, going 13 for 38 with two home runs and 10 RBI. The Athletics bullpen has been slightly better than Chicagoโs but still below average, entering the series ranked 22nd with a 4.84 ERA. Overall, while Sacramento has been the steadier team, there are enough question marks here to make laying a heavy price uncomfortable.
White Sox at A's Pick and Predictions
White Sox vs A's Moneyline pick:
- Chicago White Sox ML +140 (3 units)
I am backing the White Sox on the moneyline in this spot. Chicago has been one of the worst offensive teams in baseball, and the bullpen is far from trustworthy, but the price is simply too high given how well Fedde has pitched. His 0-3 record is misleading, as he has received almost no run support in his starts.
Severino has not found his form yet and has shown vulnerability in home environments dating back to last season. On top of that, current White Sox hitters have had success against him, which adds another layer of value to the underdog. This is not a comfortable play, but it is the right number. Take Chicago.
White Sox vs A's Total Pick:
- Under 10 (3 units)
While Sacramento can allow the ball to carry, the White Sox offense has been extremely unreliable, and it is difficult to trust them to contribute much to a high total. Fedde has been effective enough to keep the Athletics from having a breakout performance on their own.
Neither bullpen inspires confidence, but this number still feels a bit inflated given Chicagoโs offensive struggles. If Fedde delivers another solid outing, this game should stay under the total.
