Colorado Form & Recent Results

Colorado heads into this matchup in a tough skid, riding a three-game losing streak and having lost four of their last five games entering Saturday. That skid includes a home loss to the Cincinnati Reds, along with three losses on the road against the San Francisco Giants. The most recent setback was Friday’s 7–2 defeat to Cincinnati at home, where second baseman Willi Castro was one of the few bright spots. Castro went 2-for-4 and accounted for a big chunk of the offense with a single, a home run, one run scored, and an RBI.

Catcher Hunter Goodman has been Colorado’s main power source so far this season, leading the team with 27 home runs. Left fielder Mickey Moniak sits behind him in the home run race with 15 on the year. When it comes to driving in runs, center fielder Jake McCarthy has been the Rockies’ most productive run producer, pacing the team with 53 RBIs. McCarthy has also been their most consistent hitter overall, leading Colorado with a .301 batting average. Recently, though, the team has struggled to keep opponents in check. Over their last five games, the Rockies have given up about five runs per game. Overall, they’re 6–9 across their last 15 games and 6–7 so far in July, showing a team still searching for momentum.

Cincinnati Form & Recent Results

Cincinnati comes into this matchup riding a one-game winning streak, but their recent performances are a bit shakier. Before Saturday, the Reds had lost three of their previous five games, and what stung most is that all three of those losses happened at home, two against the Cubs and another against the Phillies. Even with that recent dip, Friday’s performance offered a clear reminder of what this team can look like when everything clicks, especially offensively.

In their 7–2 win over Colorado in Denver on Friday, Cincinnati’s bats came alive in a big way. Spencer Steer, who split time between right field and first base, went 2-for-4 and made those two hits count, launching two home runs while driving in three and scoring twice. One of those homers was especially memorable, as it was an inside-the-park home run. On the mound, Brady Singer gave the Reds exactly what they needed, working seven strong innings while giving up just four hits and two earned runs, issuing no walks and striking out six. As a team, Cincinnati piled up 11 hits, crushed four home runs, and totaled 25 bases, an explosive night by any standard. Over the full season, Sal Stewart has been their top power source with 19 home runs, while Steer, JJ Bleday, and Elly De La Cruz are close behind with 16 apiece. Stewart also leads the club in RBIs with 67, and De La Cruz has been their most consistent hitter by average, batting .282. Recently, though, the results haven’t always matched the talent. In their last five games they’ve allowed just 3.2 runs per game, yet they’re still only 5–7 in July and 5–10 over their last 15.

Key Stats

  • Cincinnati’s Sal Stewart this season: 19 HRs, 67 RBI, .257 AVG
  • Colorado’s Jake McCarthy this season: 27 HRs, 51 RBI, .251 AVG

Cincinnati vs. Colorado Picks and Prediction

After making the playoffs a year ago, the Reds haven’t been able to find that same rhythm, and the start of the second half hasn’t made things any easier. They’ll try to get back on track with a win in Denver, but the Rockies will be looking to take advantage at home and stack as many victories as they can. On the mound, Cincinnati is expected to go with right-hander Hunter Greene, who’s 1–1 this season with a 6.97 ERA and is still searching for consistency. Colorado will counter with righty Ryan Feltner, who comes in at 3–3 with a 4.55 ERA and has given the Rockies a steadier presence so far. Final Score Prediction, Cincinnati Reds win 5-2.
