Slow fade for Cincinnati
The Cincinnati Reds will have to try again next season after briefly flirting with a playoff spot this season. The Reds have slowed in September and are likely hoping to end the season with a winning record. Over the weekend, the Reds lost each of the first two games of their series against the Athletics in Sacramento. On Sunday, in the series finale, the Reds were swept in a 7-4 loss to the A’s. Starter Nick Lodolo allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings of work to take the loss.
The Reds have two weeks left in the season, ample opportunity to close out on a high note in manager Terry Francona’s first season at the helm. The Reds will turn to righty Zack Littell for the series opener against the Cardinals. Littell is 9-8 on the season in 29 starts, including 17 quality starts. He has allowed 163 hits in 171.1 innings of work, including a whopping 34 home runs. Littell has an ERA of 3.78 and a WHIP of 1.12 while walking 29 and striking out 120. The Reds have lost four of Littell’s last five games. He has a record of 7-4 on the road with an ERA of 3.87 in 16 starts.
Key Injuries: SP Rhett Lowder, RP Ian Gibaut, SP Brandon Williamson, and LF Tyler Callihan are out.

Cardinals back to the drawing board
The St. Louis Cardinals will be on the outside, looking in during the National League playoffs for the third straight season. They’ve hit a rough patch recently, putting their chances of having a winning season in jeopardy. The Cardinals were in the middle of a five-game losing streak heading into their series finale against the Brewers this weekend. On Sunday in Milwaukee, the Cardinals ended their winning streak with a 3-2 win over the BrewCrew. The Cardinals took a 3-0 lead after three innings and held on for a victory. Starter Miles Mikolas went five innings and allowed five hits and two runs to pick up his eighth win of the season.
The Cardinals are in fourth place but can close the gap on the third-place Reds with a big series this week. They’ll open the series with righty Matthew Liberatore on the hill. Liberatore has a record of 7-12 in 27 games, including 10 quality starts. He has allowed 110 hits in 149 innings of work. Liberatore has allowed 18 home runs. He has an ERA of 4.35 and a WHIP of 1.33, while striking out 110 batters and walking 38. The Cardinals have won three of Liberatore’s last five starts. He has gone 5-5 in 12 starts at home this season with an ERA of 4.18.
Key Injuries: RP Zack Thompson, SS Masyn Winn, and RP Packy Naughton are out.

Money line Pick for Reds vs. Cardinals
- Reds ML (4 units)
The Reds and Cardinals are both out of the hunt with just two weeks left in the season. For one of the teams, the Reds, a winning season will be a significant achievement. Excluding the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, the Reds have had just two winning seasons in the last 15 years. They are right on the edge of a winning season right now, and have a chance to eclipse the 82 wins they earned in 2023. The Cardinals have been a regular contributor to the playoffs over the past few decades, and a winning season isn’t as critical to them. The Reds have the advantage on the mound on Monday. Littell has seven wins away from home this season. He already has a quality start this season against the Reds as well, getting a no-decision while allowing six hits and three earned runs in seven innings of work. Liberatore is 0-1 in two starts against the Reds this season with an ERA over five and three home runs allowed.
Take the Reds with the money line.
Over/Under Pick for Reds vs. Cardinals
- Under
The offenses have faded for both teams with the season nearly over. The Reds come into this contest having gone under the number in four of their last five games. The Cardinals have gone under the number in three of their last five games. Three of the last five meetings between the two teams this season have gone under the total as well.
Take the Under.
