This series looms large for Cleveland
Cleveland (82-71 SU, 82-71 RL, and 68-79-6 O/U) swept Detroit in its previous series. The Guardians are 9-1 in their last ten games (the under was 8-1-1).
Cleveland will start left-hander Joey Cantillo on Sunday. In his last outing, the 25-year-old allowed one run on four hits and two walks, fanning three batters in five innings against the Tigers. He is 5-3 with a 3.27 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 32 appearances (85.1 IP) this year, including 3-1 with a 2.89 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 19 road appearances (46.2 IP).
The Guardians had the second-best record in the American League last season but fell short in the postseason, as New York bounced them 4-1 in the ALCS. They are second in the AL Central this year, but just swept division leader Detroit and only trail them by 2.5 games. They're also only 1.5 games out of the Wild Card race. Minnesota (66-87 SU, 71-82 RL, and 73-70-10 O/U) lost two of three games to the Yankees in its previous series. The Twins are 3-7 in their last ten games (the over was 6-3-1).
Minnesota will turn to right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson tomorrow against the Guardians. In his last start, the 24-year-old held New York scoreless with 11 Ks in a six-frame victory. He is 7-4 with a 4.31 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 21 appearances (100.1 IP) this season, including 5-2 with a 3.05 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 11 home starts (56.0 IP).
The Twins had a solid run in May, compiling an 18-8 record, but have collapsed since then. The front office decided against investing in the ballclub at the trade deadline, making multiple trades that left Minnesota in poor shape for the final two months of the season. The Twins won't be making an appearance in the postseason in 2025, but will they at least be competitive?
