Rockies look to the future

The Colorado Rockies may have officially hit rock bottom this season, with over 100 losses for the third straight season. With 115 losses heading into Thursday night’s series finale with the Mariners, the Rockies have already established a new record for losses in a season in team history. The Rockies have lost three of four games heading into Thursday night’s series-closing game against the Mariners in Seattle. On Wednesday, the Rockies fell 9-2 to the Mariners. The Rockies’ bats were silent for much of the game with just two hits. One of those hits was a solo home run from Blaine Crim.

The Rockies will turn to veteran righty German Marquez to kick off their final series of the season. Marquez is just 3-15 on the season in 25 starts, including six quality starts. He has allowed 163 hits in 122 innings and given up 21 home runs. He has an ERA of 6.49 and a WHIP of 1.70. He has struck out 82 and walked 45. The Rockies have lost each of Marquez’s last five starts. He is 2-6 on the road this season in 14 starts with an ERA of 6.96. Marquez is 0-3 in September with an ERA of 8.38

Giants are trying to finish strong

The San Francisco Giants are finishing up what started as a promising season but is ending with disappointment. The Giants were in the hunt for the top spot in the NL West Division for the first two months of the season. That inspired the team to make a blockbuster deal with the Red Sox to acquire All-Star Rafael Devers. Unfortunately, the team began to decline soon after the deal, and now it will need to make some decisions this offseason to become a contender again. The Giants lost the first two games of their three-game set at home against the Cardinals this week. On Wednesday, the Giants bounced back for a 4-3 win. Devers hit a solo home run, and Andrew Knizner knocked in two, including an RBI triple to give them the lead for good in the eighth.

The Giants will give the ball to rookie righty Trevor McDonald on Friday night. This will only be the third appearance of the season for McDonald, and just his second start. He is 0-0 on the season with an ERA of 3.38 and a WHIP of 1.38. He has allowed nine hits in eight innings of work. McDonald has walked two and struck out four in his two appearances. In his lone start, an eventual 3-1 Giants’ win, McDonald went six innings and allowed six hits and one run.

Key Injuries: 1B Dominic Smith and SP Landen Roupp are out.

Rockies vs. Giants pick

Money line Pick for Rockies vs. Giants

Giants ML (4 units)

The Giants and Rockies are both out of the playoffs, but the Rockies have had a near-historic losing season. Starter Marquez is just 3-15 on the season overall and is 0-3 in September, with an ERA of 8.38. The Giants will counter with McDonald, making just his second start of the season. McDonald will have the element of surprise in his favor, with just one other start under his belt. He was effective in his lone start, going six innings and allowing just a solo run. The Giants have also dominated the season series with the Rockies, winning eight out of the ten games. Make it nine out of 11.

Take the Giants with the money line.

Over/Under Pick for Rockies at Giants

  • Over

Eight of the ten games between the two teams this season have gone over the number. The Rockies have gone over the number in four of Marquez’s last five starts. As noted, Marquez has an ERA of nearly 8.50 in September and has an ERA of nearly 7.00 on the road this season. The Giants have also gone over the total in three of their last five games.

Take the Over.
