Tigers have eyes on the top seed

The Detroit Tigers arrived in Yankee Stadium on Tuesday with the American League Central Division all but sewn up. They have an eight-game cushion on second-place Cleveland in the loss column with just 18 games left in the regular season. The Tigers' only remaining goal is to secure the top overall seed in the American League and ensure home-field advantage throughout the AL playoffs. Over the weekend, the Tigers surprisingly lost two of three games to the last-place White Sox in Detroit. That includes a 6-4 loss on Sunday. The Tigers led 4-3 heading into the 7th inning, but the bullpen couldn’t make the lead hold up, allowing a solo run in the 7th and two more in the eighth to take the loss. Reliever Tommy Kahnle took the loss after surrendering three hits and two runs in just .2 innings of work.

The Tigers are heading down the home stretch and are in a prime position to claim the top spot in the AL with a strong finish. They will turn to righty Jack Flaherty in game two in the Bronx on Wednesday. Flaherty is just 7-13 on the season in 28 starts, including 10 quality starts. He has an ERA of 4.85 and a WHIP of 1.30. Flaherty has allowed 137 hits in 146.2 innings of work, which includes 22 home runs allowed. He has walked 54 batters and struck out 171. The Tigers have lost four of Flaherty’s last five starts. He is just 2-6 on the road in 12 starts with an ERA of 5.64.

Key Injuries: RP Paul Sewald, RP Ricky Vanasco, and RP Kyle Finnegan are out.

Yankees hunting a division crown

The New York Yankees are all but assured one of the three AL wildcard spots this season, with under 20 games left in the regular season. They can now set their sights on catching the Toronto Blue Jays for the American League East crown. After taking two of three games from the Jays in New York over the weekend, the Yankees come into this series trailing them by just two games. On Sunday, in the series finale, the Bombers prevailed 4-3 to tighten the gap in the division. Starter Max Fried settled in after a slow start, holding the Jays to just three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. Cody Bellinger doubled home the go-ahead run in the third inning to make the Yankees winners.

The Yankees are now in a three-way fight with the Blue Jays and Red Sox for the top spot in the AL East Division. They will try to keep things tight with a win on Wednesday with lefty Carlos Rodon on the mound. Rodon is tied for the league lead in wins with 16, to go along with seven losses in 29 starts. He has 14 quality starts this season. He has allowed 114 hits in 170.1 innings of work, including 20 home runs. Rodon has an ERA of 3.12 and a WHIP of 1.07. He has walked 69 and struck out 180 batters. The Yankees have won each of Rodon’s last five starts. He is an impressive 9-3 at home this season in 13 starts with an ERA of 2.86.

Key Injuries: SP Gerrit Cole, SP Eric Reyzelman, RP Jonathan Loaisiga, and 3b Oswaldo Cabrera are out.

Money line Pick for Tigers at Yankees

  • Yankees ML (4 units)

The Yankees are in hot pursuit of the Jays for the top spot in the American League East. They have played well lately, winning 11 of their last 14 games. The Bombers will also send their top pitcher, Carlos Rodon, to the hill on Wednesday. He has been excellent at home with a 9-3 record and tops the AL with 16 wins. The Tigers counter with the struggling Jack Flaherty. They have lost four of Flaherty’s last five starts. He has an ERA close to six on the road this season and is just 2-6 away from home. The Tigers come in having lost two of three to the White Sox at home.

Take the Yankees with the money line.

Over/Under Pick for Tigers at Yankees

  • Over

These are two of the better-hitting teams in the AL, particularly the Yankees with their power. The Bronx Bombers top MLB with a whopping 243 home runs this season. They should get some good swings against the struggling Flaherty, who has given up 22 long balls this season. The Tigers have gone over the number in four of Flaherty’s last five starts. The Yankees have hit very well with Rodon on the mound as of late. The team has gone over the number in each of Rodon’s last five starts. Expect a power display on Wednesday night in New York.

Take the over.
