Detroit hasn't named a probable starter for tomorrow afternoon's game versus Boston. The Tigers will likely use right-hander Keider Montero as an opener in a bullpen game. The 25-year-old last pitched on September 20, giving up three runs on four walks and two hits — both home runs — in three innings against Atlanta. He is 5-3 with a 4.48 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 19 appearances (86.1 IP) this season, while the Tigers' bullpen has a 4.09 ERA (17th).
Detroit has been in a free fall over the last few weeks, losing its healthy division lead to Cleveland. The Tigers entered this series in a tie with the Guardians for first place, although Cleveland owns the tie-breaker between the teams. They are also just one game ahead of Houston for the final Wild Card spot in the American League. Can Detroit finish strong to make the postseason?
Detroit Tigers Baseball Injury Report: No new injuries to report for Saturday's game against the Red Sox.
Red Sox will go down swinging until the last out
Boston (87-72 SU, 81-78 RL, and 76-79-4 O/U) won two of three games against Toronto in its previous series. The Red Sox are 6-4 in their last ten games (the over was 5-4-1).
Boston will start left-hander Connelly Early tomorrow against the Tigers. In his last appearance (4.0 IP loss to Tampa Bay), the 23-year-old rookie allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks, fanning four batters. He is 1-1 with a 1.88 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 22:3 K:BB ratio in three starts (14.1 IP) this year. Early was a fifth-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft out of the University of Virginia.
The Red Sox have made significant noise this season, battling until the last month of the season for a playoff spot. While some expected the team to fade in the second half, Boston has proven to be a gritty and formidable opponent, even after trading star slugger Rafael Devers. The Sox entered this series just one game ahead of the Tigers in the AL Wild Card standings. Can they finish the regular season strong and last deep into October?

Tigers vs. Red Sox Pick
Moneyline Pick for Tigers vs. Red Sox
- Detroit Tigers ML (4 Units)
Detroit has fared well against southpaws this season, ranking 2nd in wRC+ and wOBA. Early will be in for a challenge against the hungry Tigers in his fourth-ever big league outing. Boston may also find it difficult to consistently put runners on base if the visitors opt for a bullpen game. They'll probably only get one AB against each pitcher, which makes it difficult to get in a rhythm in the batter's box. These games mean a lot for both teams, but I believe Detroit will dig deep enough to win Saturday's game.
Over/Under Pick for Tigers vs. Red Sox
- Under (5 Units)
Detroit will throw as many bullpen arms as it can at Boston in an effort to limit the Red Sox offense. In theory, it's a sound strategy. With Skubal taking the mound on Sunday, the Tigers can use one or two of their high-leverage arms on Saturday, as they'll count on their ace to last deep into the series finale.
As effective as the visitors' lineup has been against southpaws, they'll face a pitcher they've never seen on Saturday. Early has been excellent all year, building off his minor league success (10-3 with a 2.60 ERA and 1.11 WHIP) with three solid MLB outings. I doubt the moment will be too big for him. With a reliable bullpen (3rd in ERA) backing him up, he should be ready to handle his business.
This game should be tense and competitive — bet on the under!
