Tigers Look To Build On A Solid 2025

Detroit opens its 2026 season in San Diego looking to build on last year’s 87–75 campaign, one that ended in the ALDS against Seattle but firmly re‑established the Tigers as a legitimate contender. The offense was middle‑of‑the‑pack statistically — .247/.316/.413 slash line, 198 homers, 758 runs, and a 101 OPS+ — but it was deep enough to win close games, and the pitching staff carried real weight with a 3.97 ERA, 1.249 WHIP, and one of the league’s better strikeout totals at 1,375. Detroit’s run prevention was strong across the board, allowing just 8.2 hits per nine and posting a 105 ERA+, and they return most of the same core. This is a club that expects to contend again, and the tone of that expectation starts with the man on the mound.

Tarik Skubal gets the ball, and there’s no mystery why. The two‑time Cy Young winner was one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball last season, going 13–6 with a 2.21 ERA, 0.891 WHIP, 241 strikeouts, and elite rate stats across the board — 6.5 H/9, 0.8 HR/9, 1.5 BB/9, and 11.1 K/9. He was even better by advanced metrics, posting a 187 ERA+ and 2.45 FIP, and he’s been consistently strong in interleague play with a 12–6 record and 3.27 ERA across 128 games (27 starts). Skubal’s ability to miss bats, limit hard contact, and work deep into games gives Detroit a clear advantage in any opener, and if he looks anything like the ace he was in 2025, the Tigers walk into Petco Park with every reason to expect a statement start to their season.

Can the Padres Take The Next Step?

San Diego opens its 2026 season looking to build on last year’s 90–72 campaign, one that ended abruptly in the Wild Card round against the Cubs but still showcased a roster built to contend. The Padres were solid offensively in 2025, hitting .252/.321/.390 with 152 homers, 702 runs, and a 96 OPS+, while their pitching staff quietly carried them with a 3.64 ERA, 1.209 WHIP, and one of the lowest hit‑rates in baseball at 7.5 H/9. They were especially tough at Petco Park, going 52–29 at home and leaning on a deep bullpen and a defense that limited mistakes. This year’s group looks similar in structure: balanced lineup, athletic outfield, and a rotation that leans heavily on its top arms — none more important than the man taking the ball on Opening Day.

Nick Pivetta gets the start, and he earned it. After arriving in San Diego and immediately transforming into the club’s most reliable starter, he posted a 13–5 record, 2.87 ERA, 0.985 WHIP, 190 strikeouts, and elite rate stats across 181.2 innings — 6.4 H/9, 1.1 HR/9, 2.5 BB/9, and 9.4 K/9. His 149 ERA+ and 3.49 FIP underline how legitimate the breakout was. Pivetta has also been excellent in interleague play (13–15, 4.16 ERA overall but far better in recent seasons), strong historically against Detroit (2–2, 2.33 ERA), and dominant at Petco Park (8–2, 2.53 ERA in 19 games). With the Padres counting on him to anchor a rotation with real question marks behind him, Pivetta’s ability to miss bats and control innings gives San Diego a fighting chance against Tarik Skubal and a Detroit team with postseason expectations of its own.

Detroit Tigers vs San Diego Padres Pick

Tigers vs Padres Spread Pick

  • Detroit -127 (4 Units)

Detroit holds the advantage on the mound, and that’s usually the clearest dividing line on Opening Day. Tarik Skubal isn’t just an ace — he’s one of the few starters in baseball who can tilt a matchup by himself, coming off a season where he overpowered hitters with elite swing‑and‑miss stuff and some of the best command numbers in the league. Nick Pivetta was excellent last year and has been strong at Petco, but Skubal’s combination of strikeout ability, low walk rate, and ability to suppress hard contact gives Detroit a steadier, more dominant profile in a game that’s likely to be tight early. Add in the Tigers’ strong run‑prevention numbers from a year ago and the fact that they tend to play clean, low‑mistake baseball behind him, and Detroit walks into this matchup with the more reliable path to controlling the game from the first pitch.

Tigers vs Padres Over/Under Pick

  • Under 7 (5 Units)

The Under 7 makes a lot of sense here because everything about this matchup leans toward a low‑scoring opener. You’ve got two frontline starters who both suppress hard contact, miss bats, and work efficiently, and they’re pitching in one of the most run‑suppressing parks in baseball. Petco has consistently played as a bottom‑tier offensive environment, especially early in the season when the marine layer is heavier and the ball doesn’t carry. Skubal’s elite strikeout‑to‑walk profile and Pivetta’s strong Petco history both point toward long, clean innings, and neither lineup was a high‑octane group last year. With two aces on the mound, a pitcher‑friendly setting, and two teams that were better at run prevention than run creation in 2025, the Under 7 has a very real path.
