Houston Looking to Earn Road Victory

Houston lost their fifth straight game as they were outslugged in the opening game of the series Friday night. The Astros entered Saturday 6-8 on the year and stood fourth in the AL West, 1.5 games behind the Rangers for the top spot. On Friday night against Seattle, Houston finished with eight hits as Yordan Alvarez (run, three RBI) and Christian Vazquez (run, three RBI) each had two to lead the way. Alvarez (his fifth) homered in a losing effort for the Astros. Tatsuya Imai threw just one-third of an inning, allowing three runs on one hit with four walks and no strikeouts, but didn’t factor in the decision. Ryan Weiss (0-2) took the loss in relief, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts over 2.1 innings of work.

Cody Bolton is expected to get the call for his third appearance, second start, of the year for the Astros.  He has no record with one save, a 3.68 ERA, a 1.227 WHIP, three walks and 10 strikeouts over 7.1 innings of work on the year. Bolton didn’t factor in the decision, which came on the road against the Rockies Monday. He threw 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts in a game Houston dropped 9-7. Bolton, in his 37th career major league appearance and second start, pitches against the Mariners for the first time. As a result, this marks his first career outing at T-Mobile Park.

Mariners Trying to Get Untracked

Seattle snapped a five-game slide as they took the opening game of this series at home Friday night. The Mariners entered Saturday 5-9 on the year and sat in the basement in the AL West, 2.5 games behind the Rangers for the top spot. On Friday night, Seattle finished with nine hits in the contest with Randy Arozarena (run, three RBI) the lone player with two. Arozarena hit his first homer of the season for the Mariners in the victory. Emerson Hancock (2-1) earned the win as he threw five innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Andres Munoz worked a scoreless ninth, allowing no hits with two walks and one strikeout, for his first save.

Logan Gilbert is on the bump for his fourth start of the season for the Mariners in this contest. He is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, three walks and 18 strikeouts over 16.2 innings of work on the year. Gilbert took the loss in his last start, which came against the Rangers on the road Monday. He threw six innings, allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts in a 2-1 Mariners loss. In his last three starts, Gilbert is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, three walks and 18 strikeouts over 16.2 innings of work. Gilbert makes his 15th career start against the Astros in this contest. He is 6-4 with a 3.33 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, 18 walks and 73 strikeouts over 83.2 innings of work. Gilbert is 18-21 with a 3.38 ERA, a 0.986 WHIP, 73 walks and 465 strikeouts over 417.2 innings of work in 73 career starts at T-Mobile Park.

Astros vs. Mariners Pick

Moneyline Pick for Astros vs. Mariners

  • Mariners (4 units)

Both teams are off to slow starts this season and entered Saturday occupying the bottom two spots in the AL West. Hunter Brown is on the shelf for the Astros, prompting them to shuffle things around and pushing Belton into the rotation, at least for now. Seattle has plenty of talent and you have to think their bats are going to get warm sooner or later. Gilbert turned in a quality start in his last outing, even though it came in a loss to the Rangers. Playing at home, give the upper hand to the Mariners as they head into the series finale assured of no worse than a split of  the four-game set.

Over/Under Pick for Astros vs. Mariners

  • Under (4 units)

Houston entered Saturday having seen the over post a 10-4 mark in their 14 games on the year. The Astros are 2nd by averaging 6.07 runs per game and that number slides to 5.73 runs per game on the road. Houston has an average total of 12.29 runs per game on the year, though that jumps to 13.59 runs a night as the visiting team. Seattle has seen the under post an 8-6 mark in their opening 14 games. The Mariners are 26th in the majors with 3.50 runs per contest though that number climbs to 4.50 runs per game at home. Seattle has an average total of 6.93 runs per contest and that number climbs to 8.25 runs per game at T-Mobile Park. Until we see the Mariners’ bats perform more consistently, this one winds up falling short of the number.
