Houston Falls in Arlington

The Houston Astros recently played a three-game series against their in-state and divisional rival, but dropped two of three games against the Texas Rangers before this series. Houston has held the lead in the AL West for the majority of the season, but their lead is small as they are only 2.5 games above the Mariners and four games above the Rangers in third. Houston has lost four of their last six, and needs to get back on track. In their last game against the Rangers, Jeremy Pena had an RBI from the top of the lineup but the team still lost 4-2.

Pena has not been their leadoff hitter all season and has batted anywhere from first to fifth throughout the year. He is their 27-year-old shortstop who has been with the team since 2022. He has the 5th best batting average in all of baseball at .304, and has contributed another 15 home runs and 54 RBIs. Jose Altuve batted third in the lineup as the DH, The long-time second baseman has made his transition to left field this year. Altuve has 24 home runs with 69 RBIs while batting .264 on the season.

Luis Garcia is making just his second start of the season, he has been with the Astros since 2020, but did not start a single game throughout all of 2024. Garcia started six games in 2023, but will need to shake off the rust in this game. In his lone start this season, he gave up three runs in six innings in a win over the Angels.

Can Toronto Hold the Lead?

The Toronto Blue Jays were not the favorite to lead the AL East this season, but have held that spot throughout most of the second half of the season. The Blue Jays are crossing the border yet again, as they played their last six games on the road, taking two of three in Cincy against the Reds and losing two of three in New York against the Yankees. In Sunday's game, the Blue Jays lost despite having five more hits than the Yankees in the 4-3 tilt.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had two hits and an RBI in their game on Sunday. He is typically their first baseman, but took the DH spot in the lineup against the Yankees. He is still celebrating his new long-term contract, and has 23 home runs and 79 RBIs on the season. George Springer has been their leadoff hitter, he has 27 home runs to lead the team while adding 72 RBIs. Bo Bichette has the most at bats on the team, he is their shortstop who is third in the MLB in batting average at .311 with 18 homers and 93 RBIs.

Jose Berrios will make his 29th start of the season as a 31-year-old right-hander. He has a 9-5 record to go with his 4.02 ERA. He has a 131-51 strikeout to walk ratio, and in his last start he gave up two earned runs in two innings in a loss to the Reds.

Moneyline Pick for Astros vs. Blue Jays

  • Blue Jays (4 units)

Based on recent performance, pitching matchups, and home-field advantage, the Toronto Blue Jays appear to have the edge in this matchups with the Astros. With José Berríos on the mound and a strong offensive lineup that has been productive at home, Toronto is well-positioned to outscore a Houston team that has struggled slightly in away games and has shown inconsistencies at the plate. Houston is starting Garcia, and he has barely been on the mound over the past two seasons. Toronto gets the win here.

Take the Blue Jays to win.

Over/Under Pick for Astros vs. Blue Jays

  • Over (4 units)

This game looks as if it will hit the over. Both teams have shown signs of offensive momentum recently, especially the Blue Jays, who have been involved in several high-scoring games, including shootout-style wins like 13–9 and 12–9. Toronto's home games have also consistently leaned toward the over, with 41 of their last 69 hitting that mark. Houston is starting a pitcher with very little experience lately. With the Blue Jays swinging hot bats and the Astros still capable of big innings, expect this game to feature plenty of offense.

Take the over.
