Houston Drops Three of Four
The Houston Astros have held the lead in the AL West for the majority of the season after a slow start, and are trying to maintain that spot as they head toward mid-September. They are currently two games ahead of the Mariners in the division race, and it is unclear if the AL West will be able to get two spots in the playoffs, given the difficult nature of the American League. Houston just lost two of three on the road against the Rangers and will need to battle the first-place Blue Jays for wins here.
The Astros lost their last game against the Rangers; they had five hits in the game, but could not generate enough offense in the 4-2 loss. Jeremy Pena had an RBI single in the sixth inning to open the scoring for the Astros. He is their shortstop, who is in his fourth big league season as a 27-year-old. This year, he has 15 home runs and 54 RBIs, and is fifth in the Major League with his .304 batting average. Their only other RBI of the game came from Yanier Diaz, who was batting seventh in the lineup and has 18 home runs and 60 RBIs this year as their catcher.
Jason Alexander will make his 10th start of the season for the Astros as a 32-year-old right-hander. He began the season with the Athletics, but now brings his 4.68 ERA to Houston. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is 52-22. In his last game, Alexander gave up three runs in five innings in a win over the Yankees.
Blue Jays Fall in the Bronx
The Toronto Blue Jays are in a similar position as the Astros, as each club is desperately trying to hang on to their well-earned lead in the divisional race. The Blue Jays took over the AL East near the All-Star Break, but are still only two games ahead of the Yankees and three games ahead of the Red Sox in the standings. Given the overall strength of the AL East, the Blue Jays should be in good shape for a postseason berth even if they do get caught by one of their rivals.
The Blur Jays are coming off two straight low-scoring losses in the Bronx, as they dropped two in a row against the Yankees in games that stayed under the total. In their last matchup, the Blue Jays lost 4-3 despite getting two hits and an RBI from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Guerrero is their first baseman who takes the third spot in the order, and took a day off fielding, lining up as the DH against New York. Guerrero has 23 home runs and 79 RBIs while batting a strong .301 at the plate. The Blue Jays will have to deal with the injury bug, as starting shortstop Bo Bichette was recently placed on the 10-day IL.
Jose Berrios will make his 29th start of the season as a 31-year-old right-hander with a 9-5 record. His ERA is 4.02 to go with 131 strikeouts against 51 walks. In his last start, Berrios gave up two runs in two innings in a win over the Reds.
Houston Astros vs. Toronto Blue Jays Pick
Moneyline Pick for Astros vs. Blue Jays
- Astros (4 units)
The Astros are the more desperate team here; they have dropped three of their last four and need to get out of this rut to keep the Mariners at bay. The AL East is strong, while the West might only get one team in the playoffs. This maximizes the importance of keeping the number one spot in their division, and the Astros will get a win with a hot hand on the mound. Alexander has led the Astros to a win in each of his last seven games and held both the Yankees and Marlins scoreless over the stretch. The Astros' lineup is healthy and will get a much-needed win here.
Take the Astros to win.
Over/Under Pick for Astros vs. Blue Jays
- Under (4 units)
This pick is based on the starting pitchers, as Berrios has been one of the top arms for the Blue Jays all season, and Alexander is peaking at the right time of the season. Starting with Houston, Alexander has led the team to wins in each of his last seven starts. Throughout that stretch, he has never given up more than three earned runs, with the majority of his games coming under that number. Berrios is on the mound for Toronto, and he has given up two or fewer runs in three of his last four games. This will be a low scoring battle.
Take the under.
