Los Angeles is Swept in Pittsburgh
The Los Angeles Dodgers are still holding on to the top spot in the NL West, but are in risk of losing that spot after their recent losing streak. The Dodgers went to Pittsburgh and promptly got swept by the Pirates who sit in last place in the NL Central. The Dodgers are still holding a small lead in the NL West, as they are two games ahead of the Padres in the playoff run. In their last game against Pittsburgh, Paul Skenes dominated the game for Pittsburgh, helping to build an insurmountable lead in the win.
Mookie Betts homered in the ninth inning in their final loss against the Pirates, but it was too little too late as the Dodgers still went down. Betts batted second as the shortstop in the lineup, and is in his sixth season with the Dodgers after playing six seasons with the Red Sox to start his career. This year, Betts has 15 home runs and 61 RBIs while batting .250 at the plate. Shohei Ohtani went 0-3 on Thursday, but is still the top offensive threat on the team with 46 home runs and 87 RBIs while batting .279. Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman are two strong hitters who follow Betts and Ohtani in the lineup.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto will make his 27th start of the season, and has over 40 more innings pitched than any other Dodger pitcher. His ERA is 2.82 as a 27-year-old right-hander, and he has a 167-48 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In his last start, he pitched seven innings, allowing just one run against the Diamondbacks in a win.
Orioles Impress Out West
The Baltimore Orioles have not had the strongest season in the American League, but what have they done for us lately? The Orioles just went on the road against San Diego and stole all three wins on the road against the Padres. Baltimore is still a long way out of playoff contention, as they are last in the AL East, trailing the Blue Jays by 17 games. The Orioles are nine games out of the final Wild Card spot, but are likely running out of time as they will watch the playoffs from home.
In their last game against the Padres, the Orioles blasted four home runs in their 7-5 win. Jackson Holliday hit a home run in the first at-bat of the game, setting the tone in the Baltimore win. Holliday is just 21 years old, but has been their most consistent batter as he leads the team with at-bats and has contributed 16 home runs and 52 RBIs. Holliday is their second baseman who is batting .249 from the top of the lineup. Gunnar Henderson is their shortstop, at 24 years old he did not quite put up the MVP-worthy numbers that were expected, but is still having a strong season with 16 home runs and 61 RBIs to go with his .278 batting average.
Trevor Rogers will make his 15th start of the season as a 27-year-old left-hander. He has a strong 8-2 record, with the team winning in each of his last five starts. His ERA is 1.39 to go with 81 strikeouts against 19 walks. In his last start, Rogers gave up one run in seven innings in a win over the Giants.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Baltimore Orioles Pick
Moneyline pick for Dodgers vs. Orioles
- Orioles (5 units)
There is a hidden secret to winning games in the end of the MLB season, and that is to find secret gems, which is what we have found here. Baltimore is starting Trevor Rogers, and if he was putting up his recent numbers all season, he would be in the running for the Cy Young Award. He has only given up five total runs in his last 34 combined innings. This spans five games, with five wins, where he gave up exactly one run in each game. He will continue his strong play against the Dodgers who have been struggling as of late. Los Angeles has big names on their roster, but it hasn't mattered much lately as they just lost three straight to the Pirates. Baltimore steals a win here.
Take the Orioles to win.
Over/Under Pick for Dodgers vs. Orioles
- Under (4 units)
The Orioles should be able to compete in this game, as they are sending out one of the hottest arms in baseball. Rogers has only allowed one earned run in each of his last five starts, and this is not due to a small sample size. He pitched seven innings in four of those five games, proving his consistency on the mound. The Dodgers are sending out Yamamoto, and he leads the team in innings pitched and is also taking on this 5th-place offense of Baltimore. The Orioles never got the production they were expecting from Henderson or the rest of their offense, all of this will lead to an under.
Take the under.
