Los Angeles Drops Four Straight
The Los Angeles Dodgers are the top team in the NL West, but are on a cold streak as they have lost their last four games coming into this series. They got swept by the Dodgers in Los Angeles and dropped the first game of this series here against the Orioles. The Dodgers still have a two-game lead in the NL West over the Padres, and they are still in excellent shape to make the postseason even if the Padres overtake them in the division.
The Dodgers lost the first game of this series 2-1 on Friday, getting their one run off a Freddie Freeman home run in the sixth inning. Freeman is a veteran first baseman, but is still putting up strong numbers with his .296 batting average to go with 19 home runs and 77 RBIs as the first baseman who bats third in the lineup. Shohei Ohtani bats leadoff in the order as the DH and has gotten back to pitching recently. He will not be on the mound here, but will still be at the top of the lineup, where he has 46 home runs and 87 RBIs on the season. Andy Pages has turned into a reliable option out of centerfield; he has 24 home runs and 79 RBIs on the season.
Clayton Kershaw will make his 19th start of the season as a 37-year-old left-hander. He has a 3.28 ERA to go with his strong 9-2 record. His strikeout to walk ratio is 61-25, and in his last start, Kershaw gave up four runs in five innings in a loss against the Pirates.
Orioles Keep the Wins Coming
The Baltimore Orioles are not in playoff position in the AL East, but they have still won each of their last four games coming into Saturday night's matchup. Baltimore is in last place in their division, 16.5 games out of the final spot, and still eight games out of the final Wild Card spot in the American League. Despite this, they are still on a winning streak and have impressive wins over the Padres and Dodgers in the stretch.
The Orioles won the first game of this series on Friday night, it was a low-scoring battle where the Orioles won 2-1, as each team had five hits in the game. Baltimore's top offensive threat is Gunnar Henderson, who leads the team with 16 home runs and 61 RBIs to go with his .276 batting average. Henderson bats third in their lineup as their shortstop. Jackson Holliday is another young infielder with promise. He also has 16 home runs with his 52 RBIs while batting leadoff as their second baseman. Holliday bats leadoff for Baltimore, as 25-year-old outfielder Jeremiah Jackson batted second on Friday.
Tomoyuki Sugano will make his 27th start of the season as a 35-year-old right-hander. He has a 10-7 record, but the team has lost in each of his last two games. His ERA is 4.41 to go with 95 strikeouts against 35 walks. In his last start, Sugano gave up seven runs in three innings in a loss against the Giants.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Baltimore Orioles Pick
Moneyline pick for Dodgers vs. Orioles
- Dodgers (5 units)
If there was ever a buy-low moment for the Dodgers, we have finally found it. The Dodgers have lost each of their last four, and the Orioles have won each of their last four. Considering the Dodgers are one of the best teams in baseball, and the Orioles are the bottom team in the AL East, do we really expect this trend to continue? The Dodgers still have Ohtani, Betts, Freeman and Hernandez healthy, giving their offense the power needed to finally get out of this losing stretch. Baltimore is starting Sugano, and he just gave up seven runs in three innings in his last outing.
Take the Dodgers to win.
Over/Under Pick for Dodgers vs. Orioles
- Under (4 units)
These teams only combined for three runs on Friday, and have another set of two strong pitchers on the mound on Sunday who will keep this a low-scoring game. The Dodgers are starting Kershaw, and the future Hall of Famer has a strong 9-2 record and has been able to control his innings on the mound with his 3.28 ERA. Kershaw has won four of his last five starts, while allowing one or fewer runs in three of those five games. The Dodgers are on the road and will be taking on Sugano, who recently pitched five scoreless innings in a win over the Red Sox. This will be a low-scoring game.
Take the under.
