Dodgers Trying to Maintain NL West Edge
Los Angeles snapped a two-game slide as they picked up a win on getaway day at home against Arizona Sunday afternoon. The Dodgers entered Monday 78-59 and held a two-game lead on the Padres for the top spot in the NL West. Against Arizona Sunday, Los Angeles finished with 10 hits as Mookie Betts (two runs), Alex Freeland and Miguel Rojas (RBI) each recording a pair. Will Smith (his 17th) hit a pinch-hit solo homer in the ninth inning to give the Dodgers the walk-off win. Yoshinobu Yamamoto tossed seven innings, allowing one run on four hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts, but didn’t factor in the decision. Blake Treinen (1-2) tossed a scoreless ninth, striking out one, to earn the win in relief.
Clayton Kershaw gets the ball for the Dodgers as he makes his 18th start of the season in this contest. He is 9-2 with a 3.06 ERA, a 1.155 WHIP, 21 walks and 58 strikeouts over 88.1 innings of work this season. Kershaw earned the win in his last start, which came against the Reds at home last Tuesday. In his last three starts, Kershaw is 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA, a 0.72 WHIP, two walks and 12 strikeouts over 16.2 innings of work. Kershaw makes his 14th career start against the Pirates in this contest. He is 4-3 with a 3.00 ERA, a 1.049 WHIP, 23 walks and 79 strikeouts over 81 innings of work. Kershaw is 1-1 with a 3.98 ERA, a 1.328 WHIP, 16 walks and 38 strikeouts over 40.2 innings in seven career starts at PNC Park.
Pittsburgh Trying to Throw Wrench In Dodgers’ Plans
Pittsburgh fell for just the third time in 11 games as they were downed Sunday on the road in Boston. The Pirates entered Monday 61-77 and in the basement of the NL Central, 24 games behind the Brewers for the top spot. They were 12.5 games behind the Mets for the final wild card spot in the National League playoff picture. Against Boston Sunday, Pittsburgh was limited to six hits with Alexander Canario (run, RBI) was the lone player with two. Canario (his fifth) went deep for the Pirates in the loss. Mitch Keller (6-13) took the loss as he threw five innings, allowing four runs (none earned) on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts, before departing.
Carmen Mlodzinski gets the call for the Pirates as he makes his 28th appearance, 12th start, of the season here. He is 3-7 with a 3.86 ERA, a 1.321 WHIP, 23 walks and 74 strikeouts over 84 innings of work on the year. Mlodzinski didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came against the Cardinals on the road Wednesday. He threw three innings, allowing one run on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts in a game the Pirates won 2-1. In his last three appearances, two starts, Mlodzinski is 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA, a 0.78 WHIP, three walks and 12 strikeouts over nine innings of work. Mlodzinski makes his fourth career appearance, first start, against the Dodgers here. He has no record with a 0.00 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, two walks and three strikeouts over three innings of work. Mlodzinski is 8-7 with a 2.49 ERA, a 1.205 WHIP, 24 walks and 69 strikeouts over 79.2 innings of work in 49 career appearances, seven starts, at PNC Park.
Los Angeles Dodgers ML
Pittsburgh has played well over the last couple of weeks but still find itself in the basement of the NL Central. The Pirates send Mlodzinski to the bump here but he won’t go long in this contest. Kershaw has been hot of late, winning his last five starts heading into this one. Los Angeles has the better lineup and Kershaw is back to pitching like he was in the prime of his career. Pittsburgh, for all their recent success, is a team playing for little more than pride the rest of the season. Take the Dodgers on the road here as Kershaw wins his sixth straight decision.
Over
Los Angeles entered Monday having seen the over post a 67-64-6 mark in their 137 games on the season. The Dodgers are 2nd in the majors as they average 5.11 runs a game, giving them an average total of 9.43 runs per contest. On the road, Los Angeles averages 4.61 runs per game and has an average total of 8.79 runs per game this season. Pittsburgh has seen the under post a 77-56-5 mark on the year heading into Monday night’s action. The Pirates are 30th in the majors with 3.62 runs per game and that number climbs to 3.93 runs per game at PNC Park. Pittsburgh has an average total of 7.70 runs per game but that number slips to 7.54 runs per game at home. With Pittsburgh struggling offensively, the Dodgers do the heavy lifting to push this over the number.
