They were 12.5 games behind the Mets for the final wild card spot in the National League playoff picture. Against Boston Sunday, Pittsburgh was limited to six hits with Alexander Canario (run, RBI) was the lone player with two. Canario (his fifth) went deep for the Pirates in the loss. Mitch Keller (6-13) took the loss as he threw five innings, allowing four runs (none earned) on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts, before departing.
Carmen Mlodzinski gets the call for the Pirates as he makes his 28th appearance, 12th start, of the season here.
