The Los Angeles Dodgers come into this series against the Padres after taking care of business in Minnesota, as they swept the Twins over a three game series. Two of the games were tight, seeing the Dodgers win by just one run in low scoring games that hit the under. The Dodgers still have a strong lead in the NL West, as they are nine games ahead of the second place Padres, and currently have the best record in the National League, holding a game and a half lead over the Brewers.
Los Angeles had the day off on Thursday after finishing up their Minnesota series with a 4-3 win on Wednesday. Mookie Betts had three hits, including a solo home run in the second inning to help power the team to victory. Betts has been taking their cleanup spot as the shortstop, and has added nine home runs and 21 RBIs, despite only playing in 46 of the 81 team games so far. Shohei Ohtani is leading the team with 17 home runs from the leadoff spot, and Andy Pages has been batting second while contributing 15 home runs and 58 RBIs.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto will make his 15th start of the season as a 27-year old right hander. He has a 7-5 record, with a strong 2.65 ERA which ranks 8th in the MLB among qualified pitchers. His strikeout to walk ratio is 86-17. In his last start, he gave up three runs in six innings in a loss to Baltimore.

Padres Win Four of Five
The San Diego Padres are playing well recently, having won four of their last five games heading into this series with Los Angeles. This also includes their recent sweep of the Braves in San Diego, as Atlanta is still sitting on the top of the NL East. San Diego may need to set their sights on a Wild Card spot, as even though they have been playing well, they are still nine games behind the Dodgers. In terms of the Wild Card, San Diego is just a half game out of the last spot.
The Padres were also off on Thursday, giving each team a much needed reset before this divisional showdown. In Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Ty France had a home run and two RBIs in the 5-2 win. France was batting 7th in the lineup as their first baseman, and has contributed nine home runs and 26 RBIs on the season. Manny Machado leads their power statistics, as the 33-year old remains productive with his 14 home runs and 43 RBIs, but is batting an eye-opening .183 at the plate. Fernando Tatis Jr. has not shown much power this season, he has just three home runs through 78 games played, after hitting 25 last year, and 42 in 2021.
Randy Vasquez will make his 16th start of the season as a 27-year old right hander. He has a 6-5 record, and a 4.17 ERA. His strikeout to walk ratio is 59-25, with the Padres losing in four of his last five starts. In his most recent outing, he gave up six runs in 3.1 innings in a loss to the Rangers.

Do not go looking for an upset here. Both teams will be well rested, but that is a bigger advantage to the Dodgers with the more powerful lineup. The big names have not been producing for San Diego this season, as Machado is batting .183, and Tatis only has three home runs despite leading the team in at bats. This will not fare well against Yamamoto, who is having a strong season on the mound for the Dodgers. Yamamoto is top ten in the league in ERA, and is better in every category statistically than Vasquez is for San Diego. Yamamoto has 27 more strikeouts, and eight fewer walks than Vasquez, showing how much better he has been on the mound.
