Dodgers Try to Shut Down Toronto’s Bats
Los Angeles ran their postseason mark to 9-1 as they completed a four-game sweep of the Brewers by prevailing at home in Game 4 last Friday night. But a week later, they were demolished on the road by the Blue Jays 11-4, giving up nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Blake Snell pitched pretty well before the sixth inning, where he loaded the bases with no outs on a single, a walk, and a hit batter. He was relieved by Emmet Sheehan and that's when the wheels fell off for the Dodgers' bullpen, which gave up six of the nine runs. Shohei Ohtani hit a two-run blast in the top of the seventh, but by then, the game was over.
The Dodgers now try to carry that momentum with them on the road as they travel north of the border here. Against Milwaukee in Game 4 of the NL Championship Series, Los Angeles saw the Shohei Ohtani show as he set the tone both at the plate and on the mound. The Dodgers finished with nine hits as Ohtani (three runs, three RBI) had three, while Will Smith (run) added a pair in the game. Ohtani (his third, fourth and fifth of the postseason) went deep three times in the victory. The Dodgers were one of eight teams with runners in scoring position in the contest but prevailed as pitching carried the day. Ohtani (2-0) earned the win on the mound as he tossed six scoreless innings, allowing two hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts before handing things off to the bullpen.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto gets the ball for the Dodgers as he makes his fourth start of the postseason after logging 30 regular-season starts. He was 12-8 with a 2.49 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, 59 walks and 201 strikeouts over 173.2 innings of work in the regular season. In the postseason, he is 2-1 with a 1.83 ERA, a 0.864 WHIP, four walks and 18 strikeouts over 19.2 innings of work. Yamamoto earned the win in his last start, which came on the road against the Brewers in Game 4 of the NL Championship Series on October 14. He went the distance, allowing one run on three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in a 5-1 Dodgers win. In his last three starts, Yamamoto is 2-1 with a 1.83 ERA, a 0.864 WHIP, four walks and 18 strikeouts over 19.2 innings of work. Yamamoto, after making 48 regular-season starts and seven postseason starts, pitches against the Blue Jays for the first time here. As a result, this marks his first career outing at Rogers Centre.
Toronto Seeking to Prevail at Home
What a start for the Blue Jays. In that incredible bottom of the sixth inning, Addison Barger hit the first-ever pinch-hit grand slam to make it 9-1, and then Alejandro Kirk hit a 426-foot homer to deep center to score Vlad Guerrero Jr. and the rout was on. Kirk also had a single earlier in that inning after a Bo Bichette walk. Daulton Varsho also hit a 464-foot home run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game for the Jays.
Toronto trailed 2-0 in the AL Championship Series to Seattle, rallied to tie the series, dropped Game 5 and then prevailed in Games 6 and 7 at home to advance to the World Series for the first time since 1993. The Blue Jays now hope to carry that momentum into the World Series and take the early series lead. Against Seattle in Game 7 Monday night, Toronto finished with 10 hits, with Varsho (RBI) the lone player with two. George Springer had the decisive blow, a three-run homer (his fourth of the postseason), in the seventh inning to erase a 3-1 deficit to give Toronto the lead for good. Shane Bieber threw 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts, but didn’t factor in the decision. Kevin Gausman (2-1) earned the win with a scoreless seventh inning, allowing no hits with three walks and no strikeouts. Jeff Hoffman fanned the side in the ninth for his second save. Rookie Trey Yesavage was tabbed to start Game 1 of the World Series Friday night for Toronto.
Kevin Gausman is on the bump for the Blue Jays as he makes his fifth appearance, fourth start, of the postseason in this contest after 32 regular-season starts. He was 10-11 with a 3.59 ERA, a 1.062 WHIP, 50 walks and 189 strikeouts over 193 innings of work in the regular season. In the postseason, he is 2-1 with a 2.00 ERA, a 1.056 WHIP, nine walks and 12 strikeouts over 18 innings of work. Gausman earned the win in his last appearance, which came in relief against the Mariners at home in Game 7 of the AL Championship Series Monday night. He threw a scoreless inning, allowing no hits with three walks and no strikeouts, in a 4-3 Blue Jays victory. In his last three appearances, two starts, Gausman is 1-1 with a 2.19 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP, six walks and nine strikeouts over 12.1 innings of work. Gausman makes his 10th career appearance, ninth start, against the Dodgers in this contest. He is 2-3 with a 3.57 ERA, a 1.235 WHIP, 16 walks and 47 strikeouts over 45.1 innings in those outings. Gausman is 25-26 with a 3.99 ERA, a 1.265 WHIP, 120 walks and 463 strikeouts over 437.1 innings of work in 79 career appearances, 75 starts, at Rogers Centre.
Dodgers vs. Blue Jays Pick
Moneyline Pick for Dodgers vs. Blue Jays
- Dodgers (4 units)
The Dodgers have seen their starting staff excel in the postseason, posting a 1.40 ERA entering Friday night’s Game 1. The Dodgers were embarrassed on Friday night, but they can tied it up with a strong pitching performance. Gausman hasn’t been great with his control in the playoffs, handing out nine free passes in 18 innings of work. That included three walks in Game 7 (one intentional) in one inning of work. He threw 19 pitches, of which only nine were strikes. Los Angeles is due to break out with the bats sooner or later. If Gausman has control issues, look for the Dodgers to take advantage and pick up the win here.
Over/Under Pick for Dodgers vs. Blue Jays
- Over (4 units)
The Dodgers are 2nd in the majors as they average 5.06 runs a game, giving them an average total of 9.20 runs per contest. On the road, Los Angeles averages 4.64 runs per game and has an average total of 8.62 runs per game this season. Toronto has seen the over post a 94-74-5 mark on the year entering Friday night. They have some tough outs in that lineup. The Blue Jays are 3rd in the majors with 5.02 runs per game and that number edges up to 5.38 runs per game at Rogers Centre. Toronto has an average total of 9.47 runs per game but that number climbs to 9.55 runs per game at home. Three of Gausman’s last four starts have wound up over the number, and with the fact that Rogers Centre has favored hitters this season, this game ends up over the total.
