Miami fending off Braves for 3rd spot in NL East

The Miami Marlins have exceeded expectations this season, even after trading away some key pieces at the trade deadline in late July. The Marlins come into this series after taking three of four games from the Mets in New York this weekend. The three wins keep the Braves ahead of the Braves for third place in the NL East. On Monday afternoon against the Nationals, the Marlins' lineup was held to just two hits in a 2-0 loss in game one of the series. The Marlins utilized five pitchers in the game, with opener Lake Bachar taking the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in the game's first two innings.

The Marlins have won this season with a lineup that battles in every at-bat, despite lacking in star power. They have won three of four games entering play on Monday and own a three-game cushion over the Braves for third place in the division. They will turn the ball over to 24-year-old Adam Mazur in game two of the series. Mazur is 0-1 on the season in just two starts. He has allowed nine hits in 9.2 innings of work, giving up one home run. Mazur has an ERA of 5.59 and a WHIP of 1.45. The Marlins are 1-1 in Mazur's two starts thus far on the season.

Key Injuries: CF Andrew Pintar, SP Janson Junk, SP Ryan Weathers, and CF Dane Myers are out.

Nationals fade down the stretch

The Washington Nationals are on the fast track to the fourth 100-loss season in franchise history, losing eight straight games heading into the series opener on Monday against the visiting Marlins. Another losing month in September could mean 100 losses for a team that will spend the offseason trying to update key pieces of the team's management, starting with their on-field manager. On Monday afternoon against the Marlins, starter Andrew Alvarez pitched five innings of one-hit ball and the Nationals came away with a 2-0 win to end their 8-game skid. Luis Garcia Jr. went 2-for-3 and scored one of the team's two runs.

The Nationals are limping toward the finish with three of the team's projected starting five rotation on the IL, including the latest, lefty MacKenzie Gore. They'll turn to right-hander Cade Cavalli in game two of this series. Cavalli is 1-1 in five starts this season, including two quality starts. He has allowed 32 hits in 24.2 innings of work, including six home runs. Cavalli has an ERA of 5.11 and a WHIP of 1.58. The Nationals have won three of Cavalli's last five starts. He is 1-0 at home in two starts and has yet to allow an earned run.

Key Injuries: RP Jarlin Susana RP, C Keibert Ruiz, RP Marquis Grissom, RP Joan Adon, and SP MacKenzie Gore are out.

Nationals ML

The Nationals have the edge on the mound on Tuesday night with Cavalli facing Mazur. Cavalli has yet to allow a run at home in two starts this season, while Mazur has an overall ERA of 5.59 in his first two starts with Miami. The Nationals have also won three of Cavalli's last five starts. The Nationals have played better overall at home this season and will get back in the win column against the Marlins and the inexperienced Mazur.

Take the Nationals with the money line.

Over

The Marlins have gone over the number in four of their last five games. They have scored five or more runs in four of their last five games. The Nationals have allowed five or more runs in three of their last five games. They have gone over the number in three of Cavalli's last five starts. This one is also being played in one of the top-five hitters' parks in baseball. Expect this game to soar past the number.
