Miami Wins Six of Seven
The Miami Marlins are bringing positive momentum into this series with the Cardinals, as they have won six of their last seven before their trip to St. Louis. They won their final game in Philadelphia, before heading home to sweep the Giants, then take two out of three from the Rangers. Miami now sits in third place in the NL East, seven games behind the division leading Braves, and three games behind the Phillies in second. The Marlins hold a narrow 1.5 game lead over the Nationals sitting in fourth.
Miami had the day off on Thursday after wrapping up their home series against the Rangers with a win on Wednesday. In that game, Otto Lopez blasted an 8th inning two-run home run to help propel the squad to a 4-2 win. Lopez has been excellent at the plate this year, and quietly has the best batting average in all of baseball among qualified hitters at .340. The shortstop typically bats second in the order, and has a six-game hit streak heading into Friday, while adding six home runs and 35 RBIs on the season. Liam Hicks has emerged as their top power hitter, but is on the 10-day IL and will miss this game. Xavier Edwards leads off as their second baseman, bringing another six home runs and 28 RBIs while batting .293 at the plate.
Miami has not named their starter yet, Max Meyer is starting on Friday, then the starter is named for the following three games after Saturday. This leads us to believe it will be a bullpen game, where Miami will send multiple arms to the mound. The Marlins rank 12th in the MLB in team ERA at 4.04.

Cardinals Sit in Third
This is a matchup of two third place teams in the National League, and the St. Louis Cardinals are similarly seven games behind their division leader as they chase the Brewers. St. Louis is much closer to their second place spot, as they are only a half game behind the Cubs who currently hold that position. The Cardinals game on Thursday was postponed, which finished their series with the Diamondbacks, as the Cardinals lost two of the three games at home.
The Cardinals are coming off a loss on Wednesday where they gave up nine runs. St. Louis got a solo homer from Jose Fermin late in the ninth inning, but it was far from enough as they fell by five runs. Fermin played third base, center field, and left field all on Wednesday, as the utility player has three home runs and 15 RBIs in his appearances this season. Jordan Walker has been their best power hitter, and the team is hoping he can turn into a superstar as he is still just 24-years old. Walker has 18 home runs and 58 RBIs while typically batting third as their right fielder. Alec Burleson adds more productivity, as he has 13 home runs and 57 RBIs on the year.
Dustin May will make his 16th start of the season as a 28-year old right hander. He leads the team in innings pitched, and has a 5-6 overall record to go with his 4.30 ERA. The team has won in each of his last three starts. His strikeout to walk ratio is 77 to 22. In his last start, May pitched just two innings while giving up six earned runs to the Royals, but the Cards were still able to win a 12-10 shootout.
Marlins vs. Cardinals Picks and Predictions
Moneyline pick for Marlins vs. Cardinals
- Β Cardinals (5 units)
Miami is on a heater, but all good things come to an end, and this likely bullpen game is the moment when Miami finally stumbles. The Marlins are 12th in team ERA, but keep in mind that factors in all of the innings pitched by their top starters. Miami will not have any of their top four pitchers, as Meyer, Alcantara, Perez and Phillips are all scheduled around this game. The Marlins will also be without their top power hitter in Liam Hicks, as he continues to sit out on the IL. This leave St. Louis is a great spot to pick up a win. May wasn't great in his last appearance, but right before that game he had a nine inning shutout against San Diego. The Cardinals is the right play here.
Take the Cardinals to win.
Over/Under Pick for Marlins vs. Cardinals
- Β Under (4 units)
Dustin May's last start is an outlier, not the norm, as he has led the team in innings pitched this season, and been solid throughout the year. In his previous two games he helped lead two shutouts against the Padres and Mets. Through those two games he had a total of 15 strikeouts against just two walks. May will return to form, and is going up against a Miami offense without their top power hitter as Hicks sits out. The Cardinals will not need to put up a lot of runs to win this one, and will cruise to an easy low scoring win.
Take the under.
