Marlins Seek to Secure Win in Series Finale

Miami had won three of their previous four games before being blanked in the opening game of this series on Monday afternoon. The Marlins entered Tuesday 65-73 on the year and stood third in the NL East, 15 games behind the Phillies for the top spot. They were nine games behind the Mets for the final wild card spot in the NL playoff picture. Against Washington on Monday, Miami had just two hits in the game. Heriberto Hernandez had the lone extra-base hit for the Marlins, a double, in the seventh inning. The team was zero for four with runners in scoring position and left six runners on base in the game. Lake Bachar (5-2) took the loss as he allowed two runs on two hits with no walks and two strikeouts over two innings of work.

Eury Perez gets the ball for the Marlins as he makes his 16th start of the season in this contest. He is 6-4 with a 4.04 ERA, a 1.037 WHIP, 27 walks and 70 strikeouts over 71.1 innings of work this season. Perez took the loss in his last start, which came Thursday on the road against the Mets. He threw two-thirds of an inning, allowing five runs on three hits with two walks and no strikeouts in a game the Marlins lost 19-9. In his last three starts, Perez is 1-1 with a 6.55 ERA, a 1.36 WHIP, seven walks and 10 strikeouts over 11 innings of work against them. Perez makes his fifth career start against the Nationals in this contest. He is 1-0 with a 2.29 ERA, a 1.169 WHIP, eight walks and 18 strikeouts over 19.2 innings of work against them. Perez has no record with a 4.15 ERA, a 1.731 WHIP, six walks and five strikeouts over 8.2 innings of work in two career starts at Nationals Park. Prior to being put in the rotation, Perez was 1-1 with a 1.99 ERA, a 1.147 WHIP, 10 walks and 27 strikeouts over 22.2 innings in eight starts split between Jupiter of the Single-A Florida State League and Jacksonville of the Triple-A International League.

Washington Looking to Secure Series Win

Washington snapped an eight-game slide as they picked up the win in the opening game of the series on Monday afternoon. The Nationals entered Tuesday 54-83 and were in the basement of the NL East, 25.5 games behind the Phillies for the top spot. They were 19.5 games behind the Mets for the final wild card spot in the National League playoff picture. Against Miami on Monday, Washington was limited to three hits with Luis Garcia Jr. (run) picking up two of them. Andrew Alvarez (1-0) earned the win in his big league debut as he tossed five scoreless innings, allowing one hit with two walks and four strikeouts. Jose Ferrer threw a scoreless ninth, allowing no hits with one walk and one strikeout, for his fifth save.

Mitchell Parker takes the ball for the Nationals in this contest as he makes his 28th start of the season. He is 7-15 with a 5.94 ERA, a 1.468 WHIP, 53 walks and 94 strikeouts over 141 innings of work on the year. Parker took the loss in his last start, which came against the Rays at home Friday night. He threw 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in a game Washington dropped by a 4-1 score. In his last three starts, Parker is 0-2 with a 9.69 ERA, a 1.538 WHIP, four walks and 10 strikeouts over 13 innings of work. Parker makes his sixth career start against the Marlins in this contest. He is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA, a 1.364 WHIP, seven walks and 17 strikeouts over 25.2 innings of work against them. Parker is 10-12 with a 3.93 ERA, a 1.267 WHIP, 43 walks and 135 strikeouts over 167.1 innings of action in 30 career starts at Nationals Park.

Miami Marlins (4 units)

Washington may have taken the opening game of this set on Monday but they hardly set the world on fire at the plate. They now send Parker, who went 0-5 with a 10.21 ERA and a 1.72 WHIP over 27.1 innings of work while allowing nine homers in six starts in the month of August, to the hill here. Perez struggled in his previous outing against the Mets but has been fairly solid this season overall. The Marlins took three of four from the Mets in the Big Apple before falling Monday. They are the better team and you have to back Perez over Parker when it comes to the mound matchup. Take Miami here as they leave town on a positive note.

Under (4 units)

Miami has gone over the number in 68 of their 138 games, with four pushes, on the season entering Tuesday. The Marlins are tied for 17th in the majors with 4.34 runs per game, a number that climbs to 4.87 runs per game on the road. Miami has an average total of 9.30 runs per game and that number climbs to 10.07 runs per game on the road this season. Washington entered Tuesday having gone over the total in 68 of their 137 games, with nine pushes, on the season. The Nationals are 25th in the majors with 4.18 runs per game, a number that falls to 3.88 runs per game at home. Washington has an average total of 9.66 runs per game and that number slips to 9.65 runs per game at home this season. We saw just two runs in the opener and even if Parker struggles, it’s hard to see the Nationals doing enough offensively. Take the under here as a result.
