Atlanta Form & Recent Results

Atlanta heads into this matchup riding a one-game winning streak, but they've recently been a little inconsistent lately. Before Saturday’s middle game of their series with the Brewers, the Braves had lost three of their last five games, with their only two victories in that stretch coming against Milwaukee and the Mets. Still, Friday’s opener against the Brewers was a good example of what Atlanta looks like when things click. In that 3–2 home win, right fielder Mike Yastrzemski provided the biggest swing of the night by going 1-for-3 with a home run, driving in a run and scoring one himself. On the mound, Martin Pérez delivered a solid start, working six innings while giving up six hits and just one earned run. He also showed decent command, issuing two walks and striking out five to help keep Milwaukee’s lineup in check.

Throughout the season, Atlanta’s offensive leaders have been fairly clear. First baseman Matt Olson has been the team’s most consistent power threat, pacing the Braves with 20 home runs and also leading the club in run production with 51 RBIs. Behind him, catcher Drake Baldwin and center fielder Michael Harris II have been the next strongest home run hitters, each sitting at 14 on the year. Harris has also been the team’s top pure hitter, leading Atlanta in batting average at .306, which highlights how important he is at the top and middle of the lineup. The main concern for the Braves right now is pitching consistency. They’ve surrendered about five runs per game in their last five, a sign that the staff has been a bit up-and-down. That could become a major issue in Sunday’s series finale, especially against a Brewers team that’s capable of putting runs on the board in a hurry.

Milwaukee Form & Recent Results

Milwaukee comes into this matchup trying to stop a two-game skid, although they had been playing fairly solid baseball just before that, winning three of their last five games prior to Sunday. That better stretch featured a couple of victories over the Guardians and another win against the Phillies, showing they can hold their own against good opponents. Still, they hit a bump in the series opener against Atlanta on Friday, dropping a close 3–2 decision on the road. Even though the Brewers came up short on the scoreboard, they didn’t exactly look overmatched at the plate. They collected 11 hits and finished with 13 total bases. Second baseman Brice Turang was one of the bright spots, going 2-for-5 and driving in both Milwaukee runs, which kept them within striking distance all night.

The Brewers have gotten a lot of their power from first baseman Jake Bauers so far this season, who currently leads the team with 13 home runs. Turang isn’t far behind and has added surprising pop of his own, sitting second on the roster with 11 homers. When it comes to run production, Bauers and Turang have been the main drivers, sharing the team lead with 46 RBIs apiece. Milwaukee also has a reliable bat in catcher William Contreras, who leads the team in batting average at .286 and has consistently found ways to get on base. Offensively, the Brewers have averaged 3.8 runs per game over their last five, so they’ll likely need a bit more punch, or at least timely hitting, especially with their pitching staff facing a tough challenge against a Braves team that’s widely viewed as one of the league’s strongest.

Key Stats

  • Milwaukee’s Jake Bauers this season: 13 HRs, 46 RBI, .267 AVG
  • Atlanta’s Matt Olson this season: 20 HRs, 51 RBI, .273 AVG

Milwaukee vs Atlanta Picks and Prediction

Atlanta will hand the ball to right-hander Bryce Elder for the finale of this series against Milwaukee. Elder has put together a solid season so far, going 5–4 with a 3.15 ERA, and the Braves will be counting on him to set the tone early and help them close things out with a win at home. The Brewers will counter with lefty Robert Gasser, who is still searching for his first victory of the year at 0–3 with a 4.88 ERA. Milwaukee will try to back him with timely offense and clean defense as they look to keep their momentum on the road, while Atlanta aims to protect its home field and finish the series on a high note. Final Score Prediction, Atlanta Braves win 9-4.
