Brewers give up four in the first inning, and cannot recover

The Milwaukee Brewers scored one run in the top of the first inning on Wednesday, but gave up four runs in the bottom half of the inning to trail 4-1, and were not able to recover, scoring single runs in the fourth and the 7th inning but falling short in the end.  Milwaukee left seven runners on base and was 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position. First baseman Jake Bowers did the most damage for Milwaukee at the plate with a pair of hits, including an RBI single in the fourth and a solo homer in the seventh.

Michael Busch homered to lead off the first, while Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a two-run single and Ian Happ scored on a wild pitch. Chicago had just eight hits in the victory, with Nico Hoerner and Kyle Tucker each having two, and four others had one hit apiece. Chicago stranded seven base runners, and the Cubs were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Chicago received 4.0 innings of work from starter Jameson Taillon, who gave up two runs on five hits. The bullpen worked five innings, allowing one run on two hits, with four of the five relievers not allowing any runs, and one, Andrew Kittredge, giving up one run. Drew Pomeranz recorded the victory after pitching one inning, allowing no hits and no runs with two strikeouts. Chicago has not yet announced its starting pitcher for Thursday’s Game 4.
