Milwaukee Fights for First
The Milwaukee Brewers will play in the postseason, which has already been decided, but they do not know yet what seed they will be in the National League. They have the best record in the MLB, but the red-hot Phillies are only two games behind them with enough time to catch up. The Brewers took a slight step back on Friday night, as they fell 7-1 in the first game of this series against the divisional rival. Milwaukee had 12 hits on the night, but could still only generate one run in the loss.
Their only run came off the bat of Sal Frelick, who had a solo home run from the leadoff spot. The 25-year-old outfielder is in his third season in the league, with all three years being played with the Brewers. So far this season, he has 12 home runs and 62 RBIs with a strong .295 average from the top of the lineup. Christian Yelich has been their top power hitter; the veteran leads the team with 29 home runs and 100 RBIs. Yelich has been batting third as their DH, and is batting .269 on the season. Jackson Chourio is their young outfielder; he missed some time with an injury but still has 20 home runs and 76 RBIs on the season.
Chad Patrick will make his 22nd start of the season as a 27-year-old right-hander. He has a 3-8 record, with the team going just 1-4 overall in his last five appearances. His ERA is 3.64 to go with 116 strikeouts and 37 walks. In his last two appearances, he came out of the bullpen, pitching just one inning each against the Cardinals and Angels.

Cardinals are Running out of Time
The St. Louis Cardinals have not packed it up and called it a season yet, but their backs are against the wall as they make one last push for the postseason. A lot of things would need to fall their way to continue their season, as they are five games out of the final Wild Card spot with just eight games remaining on their schedule. They did their part of Friday, as they put up seven runs in their convincing win against their divisional rivals.
The Cardinals benefited from three RBIs from Nolan Arenado as the third baseman was batting fourth in the lineup. The 34-year-old veteran is in his fifth season with the team after playing the first part of his career with the Rockies. This season he has ten home runs to go with 48 RBIs and his .233 batting average. Wilson Contreras has been their top power hitter, but will miss this game as he is still on the 10-day IL with a shoulder strain. Alec Burleson has the top batting average on the team at .289. He has been batting third as their first baseman and has added another 18 home runs and 66 RBIs.
Miles Mikolas will make his 30th start of the season for the Cardinals. He is a 37-year-old right-hander with an 8-10 record and a 4.80 ERA. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is 93 to 34. In his last start, Mikolas pitched five innings, giving up two runs against this Milwaukee team in a win.
Milwaukee Brewers vs. St. Louis Cardinals picks
Moneyline pick and prediction for Brewers vs. Cardinals
- Brewers -150 (5 units)
I expect to see a bounce-back performance here from the Brewers, as the team is too strong to put up two bad games in a row while fighting for the top spot in the National League. The Brewers were able to put the ball in play frequently Friday night; they still had 12 hits, but just did not convert enough runs. That will change here as they go against Mikolas on the mound. His ERA is up at 4.80, and he gave up two home runs the last time he pitched against Milwaukee. The Brewers are only two games ahead of the Phillies for the number one seed, while the Cardinals likely know they will not be playing in October. The Brewers have more motivation and will grab a win here on Saturday.
Take the Brewers to win.
Over/Under Pick for Brewers vs. Cardinals
- Over 8.5 (4 units)
These teams are both seeing the ball well, as Milwaukee had 12 hits and St. Louis had another 14. Milwaukee just scored nine runs in two separate games against the Angels, and still has momentum rolling their way as they sit at the top of the National League. The Brewers are starting Patrick, and while the team is playing strong, he has not been their best arm on the mound. Patrick has just a 3-8 record and was sent back to the bullpen for two games before needing to be inserted back into the starting rotation here. Mikolas is starting for the Cards with his 4.80 ERA. He will struggle against this Milwaukee offense that has been one of the best in baseball all season.
Take the over.
