Is Milwaukee the best team in the NL?
Milwaukee just took three straight at Pittsburgh after losing three of their last four games. Before the Pittsburgh series, after some stumbles, Milwaukee was still 21-9 in August and 4-2 in September. Injuries have been an issue as OF Christian Yelich is day-to-day with a back injury and closer Trevor Megill (30 saves, 2.54 ERA) is on the IL with a flexor strain. They are going with a closer-by-committee, though Shelby Miller does have 10 saves. He hasn't pitched since Sept. 1 due to an elbow injury and is on the 60-day IL. Aaron Ashby (3rd save) and Abner Uribe (5th save) both closed games successfully over the weekend.
Milwaukee will send veteran left-hander Jose Quintana to the mound, who is 11-5 with a 3.72 ERA. Quintana is 4-1 over his last seven starts. That includes his last start, where he allowed three runs on seven hits in a 6-3 home win over Philadelphia on Wednesday. He last faced Texas on Aug. 29, 2023, holding them scoreless in six innings. But the Rangers won the game 2-1.
Too little, too late?
Texas is in position to move up in the wild card standings, but they have to keep winning. They took two of three games against Houston at home, after losing two of three at Arizona. Texas has taken four of their last five series to keep in wild card contention. SS Corey Seager (appendectomy) hasn't played since Aug. 27 and lefty specialist Danny Columbe (1.16 ERA) is on the IL with a shoulder injury.
The Rangers will send lefty Jacob Latz to the mound. He's 1-0 with a 3.15 ERA, but mainly as a reliever. However, Latz started in his last game against Arizona on Sept. 2, giving up two runs in 5.1 innings. They don't have many options with Nate Eovaldi (11-3, 1.73 ERA) on the IL with a rotator cuff strain. Eovaldi was a Cy Young candidate and will now miss the rest of the season.
Milwaukee Brewers vs. Texas Rangers Pick
Spread Pick for Brewers vs. Rangers
- Milwaukee -118
This is a bit of a mismatch on paper, so I'm taking a look at the lefty/righty matchup. Milwaukee hits .266 against southpaws and average 5.1 runs per game against lefties. They are even better on the road, averaging 5.8 runs per game and are hitting .279 against lefties. Texas is hitting just .231 against southpaws and Quintana, who has pitched in both leagues, should confuse most of the Texas batters. Milwaukee has also won six straight in this series going back to 2023.
- Over 8.5
Milwaukee is one of the top teams in all of baseball for a reason. They can flat-out hit. They rank second in baseball in runs per game (5.11) and second in batting average (.260). Texas ransks 17th in home runs with 159. The Brewers also pound left-handers, and a former reliever like Latz will be in trouble.
