Can New York avoid collapsing down the stretch?

New York (81-76 SU, 75-82 RL, and 74-75-8 O/U) lost two of three games to Washington in its previous series. The Mets are 5-5 in their last ten games (the over/under was split 5-5).

New York will start righty Nolan McLean on Thursday against Chicago. In his previous appearance (5.0 IP no-decision vs the Nationals), the 24-year-old allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits with six strikeouts. He is 4-1 with a 1.27 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in seven starts (42.2 IP) this year, including 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in three road starts (18.1 IP).

The Mets have dropped like a lead balloon since August, losing 29 of their 48 games. They have fallen 11 games back of Philly in the National League East title race and are in a tight race with Arizona and Cincinnati for the last NL Wild Card spot. With only a few games remaining on its schedule, New York has to rediscover its magic to hold off the Diamondbacks and Reds and earn a trip to the playoffs.

Cubs must regain momentum before the playoffs

Chicago (88-69 SU, 72-85 RL, and 70-74-13 O/U) was swept by Cincinnati in its previous series. The Cubs are 4-6 in their last ten games (the over/under was split 4-4-2).

Chicago will turn to southpaw Shota Imanaga tomorrow against New York. In his previous outing (5.0 IP no-decision vs the Reds), the 32-year-old gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits, including three homers. He is 9-7 with a 3.37 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 24 starts (139.0 IP) this season, including 4-2 with a 3.29 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in 11 starts at Wrigley Field (65.2 IP).

The Cubs are one of the top contenders in the National League after racing out to a 57-39 record in the first half of the season. They haven't been as successful since the All-Star break, though, going 31-30. With Milwaukee red-hot, Chicago has fallen 6.5 games back in the NL Central standings. Can they recover in time to make a deep run in the postseason?

Mets vs. Cubs Pick

Moneyline Pick for Mets vs. Cubs

  • Mets ML (4 Units)

Imanaga has been untrustworthy this month, pitching to a 4.91 ERA in four starts. He has been especially home run-prone recently (five HR allowed in his last two starts), and he's given up ten long balls in his previous five starts. That's a red flag ahead of a matchup with a desperate Mets team that scored ten runs on 11 hits, including three homers, in Imanaga's last outing against them.

McLean has only made seven career MLB starts, but he's been rock solid in them, allowing two or fewer earned runs in each appearance. Chicago has been fading recently, losing five straight, and has never faced the young right-hander. With New York in a must-win mode to make the playoffs, I lean towards their side in Thursday's game.

Over/Under Pick for Mets vs. Cubs

  • Over 7.5 (5 Units)

This total is too low, given how ineffective Imanaga has pitched lately. He is a fly-ball pitcher with a home run problem facing a New York lineup that's hit the fifth-most homers in MLB this year. I don't trust him to keep the ball in the yard or limit the Mets to three or fewer runs. It's also unlikely the Cubs will be held to a low number, as they average 4.7 runs at Wrigley. Neither bullpen has been lights out this season, either (12th and 14th in ERA).
