Mets in a fight to the finish

The New York Mets are battling for their playoff lives as they visit Wrigley Field for this three-game set starting Tuesday night. The Mets come into the series tied with the Reds for the 3rd and final wildcard spot, with the Reds holding the tiebreaking advantage. Over the weekend, the Mets dropped two of three games to the Nationals at home. On Sunday, the Mets fell 3-2 after falling behind 3-0 after just two innings. The Mets scored solo runs in the 3rd and sixth innings, but couldn’t get over the hump. Shortstop Francisco Lindor homered in the loss.

The Mets are now officially in do-or-die mode with the season down to the final week. They’ll turn to rookie righty Jonah Tong in game two on Wednesday night. Tong is 2-2 in four starts this season, including one quality start. He has allowed 17 hits in 16.2 innings of work and has given up three home runs. Tong has an ERA of 5.94 and a WHIP of 1.44. The Mets have gone 2-2 in his four starts thus far. On the road, Tong is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in one start. He is just 1-2 with a 7.71 ERA in September.

Cubs closing in on top wildcard spot

The Chicago Cubs sit atop the wildcard standings in the National League, with a three-game cushion over the San Diego Padres entering the final week of the season. This, despite being swept over the weekend by the Cincinnati Reds in a four-game sweep. That included a 1-0 loss to the Reds on Sunday afternoon. Jameson Taillon took the loss despite an outstanding performance. He went seven innings and allowed five hits and one run while striking out four batters. The Cubs were held to just six hits in the loss.

The Cubs will look to build back some momentum as they welcome the Mets this week. With four straight losses heading into Tuesday night, the Cubs certainly want to end this most recent skid. They’ll go with lefty Matthew Boyd on Wednesday night. Boyd is 13-8 on the season in 30 starts, including 17 quality starts. He has allowed 152 hits in 174.1 innings of work, including 18 home runs. He has an ERA of 3.20 and a WHIP of 1.11. Boyd has walked 41 batters and struck out 151. The Cubs have lost three of Boyd’s last five starts, but he has won two straight. Boyd is 11-1 at home this season in 14 starts. He is 1-1 with an ERA of 6.00 in three September starts.

Key Injuries: No Injuries to Report.

Mets vs. Cubs Pick

Money line Pick for Mets at Cubs

  • Cubs ML (4 units)

The Cubs have the right pitcher on the mound on Wednesday night against the Mets. Boyd has 11 of his 13 wins this season at home, and his ERA is a tidy 2.45 in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. He comes in with two straight wins overall and faces the Mets’ Tong, who is 1-2 in September with an ERA of nearly 8.00. The Cubs still have something to play for, namely the top wildcard spot and home-field advantage in the first round. The Cubs are also 46-29 at home this season and 48-36 in night games. They’ll take advantage of the inexperienced Tong and continue their solid play at home.

Take the Mets with the money line.

Over/Under Pick for Marlins at Phillies

  • Over

The Mets have gone over the number in three of Tong’s four starts this season. They have also gone over the number in two of their three games with the Cubs this season. The Cubs have gone over the number in three of Boyd’s last five starts. They have also gone over the number in three of their last five games and two of their last three heading into Tuesday night’s series opener.

Take the Over.
