New York Trying to Gain Ground in NL East Race
New York struggled over the weekend, dropping three of four at home to the Marlins on Sunday afternoon. The Mets entered Monday 73-64 and stood second in the NL East, six games behind the Phillies for the top spot. They held a four-game lead over the Reds for the final wild card spot in the National League playoff picture. Against Miami Sunday, New York was limited to five hits as Jeff McNeil (run) was the lone player with two. The Mets went zero for seven with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base in the game. Kodai Senga (7-6) took the loss as he allowed five runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 4.2 innings of work.
Nolan MacLean is on the hill as he makes his fourth start of the season in this contest for the Mets. He is 3-0 with a 0.89 ERA, a 0.689 WHIP, four walks and 21 strikeouts over 20.1 innings of work. MacLean earned the win in his last start, which came against the Phillies at home on Wednesday. He threw eight innings, allowing no runs on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts in a 6-0 Mets victory. MacLean, in his fourth career major league start, pitches against the Tigers for the first time here. As a result, this marks his first career outing at Comerica Park. Prior to being called up, MacLean was 8-5 with a 2.45 ERA, a 1.126 WHIP, 50 walks and 127 strikeouts over 113.2 innings in 21 appearances, 18 starts, with Double-A Binghamton of the Eastern League and Triple-A Syracuse of the International League.
Tigers Trying to Coast Home in AL Central
Detroit won for just the second time in seven games as they blanked the Royals in the rubber game of a three-game set on the road Sunday afternoon. The Tigers improved to 80-58 on the year and entered Monday with a massive 9.5-game lead on the Royals in the AL Central. Against Kansas City Sunday, Detroit totaled nine hits as Gleyber Torres (RBI), Jake Rogers (run, two RBI) and Wenceel Perez each had two. Tarik Skubal (12-4) was sharp on the mound as he earned the win with seven scoreless innings of work. He allowed four hits with two walks and four strikeouts before departing.
The Tigers have not officially named a starter but the expectation is that Sawyer Gipson-Long will get the ball for his seventh appearance, third start, of the season here. He is 0-1 with a 4.32 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, four walks and 20 strikeouts over 25 innings of work. Gipson-Long didn’t factor in the decision in his last outing, which came in relief, against the White Sox on the road August 13. He threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit with no walks and two strikeouts in a 1-0 Tigers win. In his last three appearances, one start, Gipson-Long is 0-1 with a 4.61 ERA, a 0.951 WHIP, two walks and 10 strikeouts over 13.2 innings of work. Gipson-Long, in his 11th career appearance, seventh start, pitches against the Mets for the first time here. He makes his fifth career appearance, fourth start, at Comerica Park here. Gipson-Long is 1-1 with a 3.93 ERA, a 1.091 WHIP, five walks and 18 strikeouts over 18.1 innings of work in those outings.
New York Mets ML (4 units)
Both teams find themselves in playoff position in the stretch run of the season. The Tigers are in a bit of a shaky spot on the mound here with Casey Mize going on Wednesday. MacLean has been tremendous in his first three big league starts and his unfamiliarity to the Tigers’ hitters works in his favor as well. Detroit has a bigger cushion in the playoff picture so they may be a bit more conservative with things here. The Mets have a good lineup to rely on and with their edge on the mound here, you have to give them the slight advantage in this contest. Take the Mets to pick up the win here.
Under (4 units)
The Mets are tied for 9th in runs per game with 4.74 runs a night, a number that edges down slightly to 4.52 runs per game on the road entering Tuesday night. New York has an average total of 9.02 runs per game and that slips to 8.91 runs per game on the road. The Mets entered Monday having seen the under post a 66-64-7 mark in their opening 137 games of the year. Detroit has seen the over post a 70-60-8 mark on the season entering Monday. The Tigers are 8th with 4.79 runs per game, a number that jumps to 5.07 runs per game at home. Detroit allows 4.14 runs per game, giving them an average total of 8.93 runs per game. That number jumps to 9.14 runs per game at home on the year. With MacLean pitching well, lean toward the under in this contest.
