The New York Yankees and Athletics continue their weekend series on Saturday in Sacramento. This article was written before the conclusion of Friday night’s series opener, but the Yankees entered the matchup at 34-22 and riding a four-game winning streak. The Athletics came in at 27-29, still sitting second in their division despite being under .500 and entering the series on a three-game losing streak.

Still the Bronx Bombers

The Yankees are one of the most dangerous teams in the American League, with the offense starting to heat up in a major way. On the season, New York ranks 14th in batting average, but the Yankees are fourth in runs scored, first in home runs, and second in slugging percentage.  Aaron Judge is once again leading the way, ranking fourth in Major League Baseball with 17 home runs. Ben Rice has also been excellent, batting .290 with 16 home runs.

The Yankees pitching is in good shape. Scheduled to start on Saturday is Ryan Weathers, who is 2-2 with a 3.14 ERA, including a 2.81 ERA across three road starts. The Yankees bullpen is 11th in MLB with a 3.40 ERA, and as a team they have help their opponents to two runs or less in five of their last seven games.

Athletics struggling on offense

Despite the difficult circumstances of being a team without a true major league caliber home, the A’s have been respectable overall. The A's are contending in the AL West, but their recent offensive issues are hard to ignore. Entering this series, the Athletics had scored two runs or fewer in four of their previous five games.

The season-long numbers are mixed. The A’s rank seventh in batting average, which is encouraging, but they are only 18th in runs scored. They also rank 16th in home runs and 11th in slugging percentage, so while there is some ability in this lineup, it has not consistently translated into scoring.

Shea Langeliers has been one of the top bats for the Athletics, batting .298 with 13 home runs and 28 RBI. Nick Kurtz has also been a major run producer, leading the team with 37 RBI after hitting 36 home runs in 117 games as a rookie last season.

JT Ginn is listed to get the start for Oakland. He is 2-3 with a 3.19 ERA overall, but has struggled more at home, posting a 5.21 ERA across five games and three starts.

Yankees vs. Athletics Predictions

Yankees vs A's Side Pick:

  • Yankees ML -149 (4 units)

These two teams have been heading in different directions. The Yankees are in solid form, and have one of the most powerful lineups in baseball. New York's pitching staff and defense have also been hard to score on, making this a tough matchup for an Athletics team that came in on a three-game losing streak and has been struggling to score.

Take New York.

Yankees vs. Athletics Total Prediction:

  • Under 9.5 (4 units)

Even with this game being played in a hitter-friendly Sacramento environment, I like the under 9.5. The number feels a little inflated because of the Yankees’ power and the ballpark, but the Athletics’ offense is difficult to trust right now. Oakland entered this series having scored two runs or fewer in four of its previous five games, and that matters.

Weathers has pitched well this season, especially on the road, while Ginn has shown enough strong flashes to keep this from getting completely out of hand. The Yankees can do their part offensively, but unless the A’s suddenly wake up, this total has room to stay under.
