New York is in Playoff Position

The New York Yankees are coming down the final stretch of the season with a favorable schedule ahead of them. They will finish this series with Baltimore, then host the White Sox before the Orioles head to New York for the final series of the season. New York is currently three games behind Toronto in their division, but have the top spot in the Wild Card race. They only have a two game cushion over their competitors in the Wild Card standings, so will need to finish the season strong to hold on to their spot.

The Yankees struggled to find their offense on Friday night, as the team had just four hits in their loss to Baltimore. Their only two runs came off a Jazz Chisholm Jr. home run in the seventh inning. Chisholm is in his second season with the Bronx Bombers after coming over from Miami. He just hit his 30th home run of the season to go with 77 RBIs and his .242 batting average. Aaron Judge has fallen off the top spot in the home run race, but is still fourth in the league with 48 on the year. Judge bats second in the lineup as their right fielder and has the best batting average in baseball at .327.

Cam Schlittler will make his 13th start of the season as a 24-year-old right-handed rookie. His record is 3-3 with the team winning in five of his last six starts. His ERA is 3.41 with a 69:29 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In his last start, Schlittler gave up four runs in 4.2 innings against the Twins, but New York still pulled out the win.

Orioles are Eliminated

The Baltimore Orioles now know they can only play the role of a spoiler through the end of the season, as they cannot reach the playoffs even if they won every game from here on out. The Orioles could potentially knock the Yankees out of the playoffs, as they play on Saturday and Sunday, then finish the season with three more games in New York. They grabbed a win on Friday night behind a strong performance from Trevor Rogers on the mound as he pitched six scoreless innings.

Their offense was produced by Gunnar Henderson and Ryan Mountcastle, as the two players combined for three hits and three RBIs in the victory. Henderson is their shortstop who is in his fourth season in the majors, and leads the team with 65 RBIs and has the best batting average on the team out of qualified hitters at .276. Henderson bats third in the order and has 16 home runs on the season. Mountcastle batted behind him in the lineup on Friday as the DH, he has six home runs with 33 RBIs and a .256 batting average. Jackson Holliday is their 21-year-old second baseman who leads off and has the most homers on the team with 17.

Kyle Bradish will make just his fifth start of the season as a 29-year-old right-hander. He 1-1 record with the team winning in three of his four starts. His ERA is 2.45 with 30 home runs against eight walks. In his last start, Bradish gave up one run in five innings in a win over the White Sox.

New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles picks

Spread pick and prediction for Yankees vs. Orioles

  • Orioles (4 units)

The Orioles are out of playoff contention, but are still a tough out, and have battled the Yankees well all season. The season series is tied between these teams through their first eight matchups, and Baltimore is sending a strong pitcher to the mound in this one. Bradish only has four starts this season, but they have all been strong and never given up more than two runs in any of those starts. Bradish will fight power with power, as he has not given up a home run in any of his last three starts. The Yankees' offense can go cold in a hurry; they only had four hits on Friday night and will struggle here against Bradish. Schlittler is starting for the Yankees and gave up four runs in his last start, more than any performance from Bradish. The Orioles will upset the Yankees again here.

Take the Orioles to win.

Over/Under Pick for Yankees vs. Orioles

  • Under (4 units)

The Yankees are always a strong pick for the under, because they struggle to generate runs other than smashing the ball out of the park. This was true on Friday night, the team only had four hits, and their only two runs came off a home run. This is good news for the Orioles, as Bradish is fresh and has not allowed a home run in any of his last three starts. Both of the first two games of this series went under the number, with Baltimore failing to score on Thursday and the teams only combining for six runs on Friday. Expect more of the same here with Bradish and Schlittler on the mound as young arms with plenty left in the tank.

Take the under.
