New York Struggles with Detroit

The New York Yankees are battling for a spot in the postseason, but their start against the Detroit Tigers in their most recent series did not help their case. The Yankees got blown out by the Tigers in the first two games of their set, going down 12-2 in the first game and 11-1 in the second. New York is tied with the Red Sox in the AL East, as they are both 3.5 games behind the Blue Jays at the top. In their most recent game against the Tigers, the Yankees scored just one run from an Austin Wells home run in the 8th inning in their loss.

Wells is their starting catcher. The 26-year-old is in his third season in the league, with all three years being played with the Yankees. He has career highs of 21 home runs and 66 RBIs this season, batting .214 from the seventh spot in the lineup. Aaron Judge is still the odds-on favorite to win the AL MVP Award, as he is listed at -400, with Cal Raleigh from the Mariners next up with +250 odds. Judge has the best batting average in all of baseball at .319, to go with his 44 home runs and 98 RBIs. Trent Grisham has been their leadoff man; he has 30 home runs and 64 RBIs as their starting centerfielder.

Luis Gil will make his 8th start of the season, as he has battled injuries throughout the year. He has a 3-1 record to go with his 3.31 ERA. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is 30-23. In his last start, Gil gave up one run in six innings in a win over the Blue Jays.

Red Sox Enjoy Day Off

The Boston Red Sox come into this series on Friday well rested, as they were able to spend Thursday at home with a day off. In their previous series, Boston won two of three on the road against the Athletics, winning the first two games of the series 7-0 and 6-0, respectively. Boston is in line for a Wild Card spot, as both the Yankees and Red Sox are currently in position for a playoff berth.

In their last game against the Athletics, the Red Sox got a hit and an RBI from Jarren Duran in their win. Duran has moved back to the leadoff spot recently, as the left fielder has batted all over the lineup this season. So far this year, Duran has 14 home runs with 79 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. Trevor Story has been another solid contributor; the veteran shortstop leads the team with 24 home runs and 91 RBIs, with a .263 batting average. Star rookie Roman Anthony is still out of the lineup with an injury.

Lucas Giolito will make his 24th start of the game as a 31-year-old right-hander. He has a 10-3 record to go with his 3.38 ERA. Giolito has 107 strikeouts against 46 walks. In his last start, he gave up two runs in five innings in a loss to the Diamondbacks.

Moneyline Pick for Yankees vs. Red Sox

  • Red Sox (5 units)

Boston has had New York's number this season and will send out the more proven pitcher in this one. These teams have met ten times this season, with the Red Sox winning eight of those matchups. The Sox have controlled the series so far, and are also going to have the rest advantage in this matchup. The Sox had the day off on Thursday, while New York still had to finish up with the Tigers after getting blown out in their first two games of that series. Giolito has a 10-3 record for Boston, while Gil is making just his eighth start of the year for New York. Boston continues their domination of the Yanks in this one.

Take Boston to win.

Over/Under Pick for Yankees vs. Red Sox

  • Under (4 units)

New York is not looking strong recently; they only scored three runs combined in their first two games against the Tigers as their offense has stalled. Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Jazz Chisholm Jr. all failed to get a hit in their last game against the Tigers, and if their big names are not being productive, the Yankees struggle to put up runs. Boston will be without Roman Anthony, and losing their top prospect will not help, as they already traded away Rafael Devers at the deadline. Both starting pitchers have ERAs under 3.50, and will keep this a low-scoring game.

Take the under.
