Yankees Trying to Close Gap In AL East
New York won for the eighth time in nine games as they took the opening game of this series Tuesday night. The Yankees entered Wednesday 77-61 on the season and stood tied for second in the AL East, 2.5 games behind the Blue Jays for the top spot. They were tied with Boston for the top two wild card spots in the American League playoff picture. Against Houston Tuesday, New York had 11 hits as Jazz Chisholm Jr. (two runs, three RBI) led the team with three, while Aaron Judge (run) and Trent Grisham (two runs, four RBI) each added a pair. Chisholm Jr. (his 27th and 28th) homered twice while Grisham (his 29th, a grand slam) went deep as well. Max Fried (15-5) earned the win as he threw seven innings, allowing one run on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts, before departing.
Carlos Rodon takes the mound in the series finale as he makes his 29th start of the season for the Yankees. He is 15-7 with a 3.18 ERA, a 1.083 WHIP, 67 walks and 177 strikeouts over 164.1 innings of work on the year. Rodon earned the win in his last start, which came against the White Sox on the road Friday. The Astros entered Wednesday night 76-63 and held a three-game lead over the Mariners for the top spot in the AL West. Against New York on Tuesday, Houston was limited to five hits in the game with no player recording more than one. The Astros were just one of six teams with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base in the game. Framber Valdez (12-8) took the loss as he allowed six runs on eight hits with one walk and eight strikeouts over five innings of work.
