Yankees Trying to Close Gap In AL East

New York won for the eighth time in nine games as they took the opening game of this series Tuesday night. The Yankees entered Wednesday 77-61 on the season and stood tied for second in the AL East, 2.5 games behind the Blue Jays for the top spot. They were tied with Boston for the top two wild card spots in the American League playoff picture. Against Houston Tuesday, New York had 11 hits as Jazz Chisholm Jr. (two runs, three RBI) led the team with three, while Aaron Judge (run) and Trent Grisham (two runs, four RBI) each added a pair. Chisholm Jr. (his 27th and 28th) homered twice while Grisham (his 29th, a grand slam) went deep as well. Max Fried (15-5) earned the win as he threw seven innings, allowing one run on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts, before departing.

Carlos Rodon takes the mound in the series finale as he makes his 29th start of the season for the Yankees. He is 15-7 with a 3.18 ERA, a 1.083 WHIP, 67 walks and 177 strikeouts over 164.1 innings of work on the year. Rodon earned the win in his last start, which came against the White Sox on the road Friday. He threw six innings, allowing one run on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts in a 10-2 Yankees win. In his last three starts, Rodon is 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP, nine walks and 13 strikeouts over 17.2 innings of work. Rodon makes his 12th career start against the Astros in this contest. He is 4-0 with a 2.51 ERA, a 1.113 WHIP, 18 walks and 64 strikeouts over 64.2 innings of work against them. Rodon is 1-0 with a 2.20 ERA, a 1.291 WHIP, 13 walks and 26 strikeouts over 28.2 innings in five career starts at Daikin Park.

Houston Fighting to Maintain AL West Lead

Houston lost for the third time in four games as they were drubbed in the opening game of this series Tuesday night. The Astros entered Wednesday night 76-63 and held a three-game lead over the Mariners for the top spot in the AL West. Against New York on Tuesday, Houston was limited to five hits in the game with no player recording more than one. The Astros were just one of six teams with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base in the game. Framber Valdez (12-8) took the loss as he allowed six runs on eight hits with one walk and eight strikeouts over five innings of work.

Cristian Javier is on the bump for the Astros as he logs his fifth start of the season here. He is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA, a 1.125 WHIP, nine walks and 16 strikeouts over 16 innings of work this season. Javier didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came Friday at home against the Angels. He threw six innings, allowing no runs on no hits with three walks and six strikeouts in a game the Astros eventually won 2-0. In his last three starts, Javier is 0-1 with a 3.27 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, seven walks and 11 strikeouts over 11 innings of work. Javier makes his seventh career appearance, sixth start, against the Yankees here. He is 1-1 with a 1.99 ERA, a 0.789 WHIP, 10 walks and 39 strikeouts over 31.2 innings of work against them. Javier is 21-9 with a 2.73 ERA, a 1.044 WHIP, 106 walks and 306 strikeouts over 274 innings in 62 career appearances, 43 starts, at Daikin Park.

New York Yankees (4 units)

Houston is at home here but that didn’t help them Tuesday night against the Yankees. Javier turned in six scoreless frames against the Angels in his last start but he’s still getting back up to speed at this point in time. The Astros have had their issues putting runs on the board with any consistency, especially at home. On the flip side, New York shrugged off a cold stretch and entered Wednesday 17-9 in their last 26 games. Rodon has been solid in his career against the Astros and has won four straight starts entering this contest. Look for the Yankees’ bats to carry them to a victory here.

Under (4 units)

New York has seen the under hit in 67 of their 138 games, with five pushes, this season entering Wednesday. The Yankees are first in the majors by averaging 5.26 runs per game though they allow 4.25 runs per game, giving them an average of 9.51 runs per game. New York puts up an average of 5.36 runs per game on the road, while allowing 4.52 runs per game, giving them an average total of 9.88 runs per contest. Houston has seen the under post a 70-63-6 mark in their 139 games this season. The Astros are 25th in the majors in runs per game with 4.17 per contest, a number that falls to 3.88 runs per game at home. Their average total this season is 8.20 runs per game, though that slips to 8.06 runs per game at Daikin Park. We saw eight runs in the opener and Houston struggles here to put runs on the board. Take the under here as a result.
