Judge leading the way
The Yankees are getting into Houston after a strong stretch that has them climbing in the AL East and Wild Card standings. At 76-61, New York trails Toronto by 2.5 games, and is tied with Boston but remains firmly in the playoff hunt. Their offense ranks among baseball’s most dangerous, averaging 5.25 runs per game to lead the majors. Aaron Judge remains the centerpiece, hitting .324 with 43 home runs and an OPS over 1.100.
On the mound, Max Fried (14-5, 3.06 ERA) will get the start. While his overall season line (14-5, 3.06 ERA) shows why he’s a frontline option, his recent starts have been inconsistent. Fried has allowed 14 earned runs over his last four outings, struggling with command and occasional big innings. Still, he bounced back against Washington last week with seven sharp frames, and the Yankees will count on his postseason experience and ability to neutralize left-handed bats.
Defensively, New York remains middle of the pack, ranking 15th in ERA and 13th in WHIP. The bullpen has been tested but has generally held its own, with Devin Williams leading the way with 18 of the team’s 35 saves.
Astros keep finding ways to win
Houston sits at 76-62, still first in the AL West. The Astros rank just 24th scoring 4.2 runs per game. Jeremy Peña, leads the team with a .307 average and .842 OPS, and veteran Jose Altuve has hammered a club best 24 home runs. The Astros offense has recently received a boost with Yordan Alvarez’s return on August 26 after last playing on May 2.
The Astros’ pitching staff remains their backbone, ranking seventh in ERA (3.82) and sixth in WHIP (1.22). Framber Valdez (12-7, 3.18 ERA) is listed to start Tuesday against New York. The lefty has posted solid numbers on the season, he struggled in four consecutive starts in August, before tossing seven scored less innings against Colorado his last time out.
Pick: Yankees -115
The Yankees hold the form edge entering this matchup, having won seven of their last nine before dropping a close series finale in Chicago. Their offense has been locked in, scoring at least five runs in six of their last eight games. Meanwhile, Valdez has been unpredictable, with a 5.64 ERA across his last five outings. Fried has had his bumps but remains more reliable overall. With New York’s power bats trending up and Houston’s offense prone to quiet nights, the Yankees are the more trustworthy side at a short price.
Pick: Over 7.5
Even with two quality starters on the mound, recent form points to runs. The Yankees lead MLB in runs per game and home runs, and their lineup has consistently produced against both lefties and righties. Houston, while streaky, has shown they can break out for big totals at home, scoring seven or more in three of their last seven contests. Valdez’s inconsistency and Fried’s occasional command lapses raise the likelihood of crooked innings.
With active Yankees batting .300 lifetime off of Valdez, and active Astros hitting .299 off Fried, the over is the play.
