Phils stun Nats in extras
Philadelphia was down 5-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning, about ready to lose a series 2-1 against a team that was predicted to be one of the worst in baseball. Washington was 3-2, but they were picked last in the NL East for a reason. Their bullpen allowed runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth, thanks to solo home runs from J.T. Realmuto and Bryce Harper. In the ninth, Edmundo Sosa drove in two runs with a single with the bases loaded. In the 10th inning, Justin Crawford drove in the game-winner.
It hasn't been smooth for the Phillies, who lost two of three against Texas at home in the opening series and then were fortunate to come back to beat the Nationals in the third game to go 2-1 in that series. This is a team with immense talent led by Harper (.120, 1 HR, 3 RBI), Kyle Schwarber (.182, 2, 4) Trea Turner (.192, 1 sb) and Realmuto (.200, 1, 1). They added Adolis Garcia, who hit 19 homers with Texas last season and has 142 for his career in seven seasons.
Nola is expected to get the nod on the bump. He went five innings in his first start, allowing three runs, including two homers against Texas (5-4 loss in 10). Nola was 5-10 with a 6.01 ERA last season, allowing 18 homers in 17 starts. He was also 0-6 on the road with a 6.97 ERA and had a 4.85 ERA in five starts in April.
Colorado shocks Toronto
Toronto went to the World Series last season and Colorado won 43 games, but nobody would have known for three games in Canada. That shows you that baseball can be unpredictable, as the Rockies won two of three in the series, including a 2-1 win in 10 innings on Wednesday. That came after Colorado was swept at Miami in their first three games.
Kyle Freeland had a strong start on Wednesday, allowing five hits and a run with six strikeouts in five innings. But it was Brennan Bernardino who got the win with a strong ninth inning and Tyler Freeman drove in the game-winning run in the 10th.
Lorenzen will get the ball for Colorado in their home opener. He gave up seven hits and three runs against Miami (4-3 loss). Last season with Kansas City, Lorenezen went 7-11 with a 4.64 ERA as opponents had a .268 batting average against him. At home, Lorenzen was 3-5 with a 3.52 ERA, allowing just nine homers.

Phillies vs. Rockies Picks and Prediction
- Philadelphia -1.5 (4 units)
The Phillies went 6-0 against Colorado last season. Things haven't changed much. Nola didn't pitch in Coors last season, but he did in 2024, allowing two runs in six innings on the road and one run in 7.1 innings at home. Nola understands that you have to keep the ball on the ground in that ballpark. Lorenzen pitched against the Phillies and was rocked last season, allowing six runs and 10 hits in three innings from Philadelphia. Coors Field is not Kauffman Stadium as the thin air makes good pitchers average and mediocre ones subpar.
Total Picks for Phillies vs. Rockies
- Over (4 units)
Lorenzen is facing some big bats led by Schwarber, who is 9 for 24 against him with two homers. Nola struggles against Jake McCarthy (6 of 13, 2 HRs) and Brenton Doyle (3 for 7). Last season in Colorado. Philadelphia put up 25 runs in the first three games and allowed 12 runs. Philly has gone over in four of their first five games.
