Philly is turning to left-hander Jesús Luzardo on Wednesday against Los Angeles. In his last start (8.0 IP win vs. the Mets), the 27-year-old allowed four runs on five hits, striking out ten batters. He is 14-6 with a 4.03 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 30 starts (169.2 IP) this year, including 7-4 with a 3.55 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 15 road starts (83.2 IP).
The Mets may have garnered more offseason hype, but the Phillies have raced out to a 12.5-game division lead. They have one of the best lineups in MLB, with All-Stars littered on the field. The Phillies have been tough to beat at home (51-24 record) and in night games (61-37), but are just two games over .500 on the road. Can they make a deep run in the postseason this year?

Los Angeles (84-66 SU, 65-85 RL, and 70-73-7 O/U) won two of three against San Francisco in its previous series. The Dodgers are 6-4 in their last ten games (the under was 5-4-1).
LA will turn to lefty Blake Snell tomorrow against Philadelphia. In his last start, the 32-year-old held Colorado scoreless, fanning 11 Rockies in a six-inning win. He is 4-4 with a 2.79 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in nine starts (48.1 IP) this season, including 4-1 with a 1.44 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in six home starts (31.1 IP).
The Dodgers are fresh off a World Series title with the biggest payroll in baseball, but with a 26-27 record in the second half, they are in a tight race to win the NL West. Los Angeles has all the talent in the world, but making it back to the top of the mountain will still be a challenge. Can they hold off San Diego in the division title race?

Wednesday's game features a terrific pitching matchup. Luzardo held LA scoreless earlier this season, while Snell has held current Phillies hitters to a .151 BA with a 33.3% K% in 87 plate appearances. While both pitchers can be dominant, I believe Snell will outpitch Luzardo. LA's starter has been lights out at Dodger Stadium (.209 opponent BA with 36 Ks in 31.1 IP) and should be much fresher than Luzardo, as he has only made 21 fewer starts this season. Both lineups are scary, but the starting pitching edge should allow the home team to secure the win.

Both starting pitchers can be elite, and I expect them to turn in quality starts tomorrow. Luzardo has been more effective on the road than at home and has lowered his ERA since the All-Star break, pitching to a 3.12 ERA last month. You can't overlook his performance against Los Angeles on April 4 (zero runs and two hits allowed with eight Ks in 7.0 IP), either. Snell was injured for the first few months of the season, but has been reliable since he made his return in early August, giving up 13 runs in seven starts. His career stats against Philadelphia are encouraging, and he's coming off an 11-strikeout outing. It wouldn't surprise me if both pitchers lasted six-seven innings in a low-scoring game.
