Philadelphia Loses Momentum
The Philadelphia Phillies did not have the start of the season they were hoping for, as they are lingering around .500 with their 29-28 record. They are still second in the NL East, but are 9.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves who have control of the division. The Phillies were able to sweep the Padres in their previous series on the road, but took another step back on Friday night as they fell to the Dodgers to open this series.
The Phillies recently moved Kyle Schwarber back to his old leadoff spot after having him second in the lineup for the past season. He is not a fast base runner, but an excellent power hitter, proving it yet again with a home run on Friday. On the year he leads the team with 22 home runs and 39 RBIs while batting .238 at the plate. Bryce Harper had a tough night on Friday, he went 0-4 with three strikeouts. Harper bats third as their first baseman, and has 13 home runs and 33 RBIs so far.
Andrew Painter will make his 10th start of the season as a 23-year old right hander. This is the rookie season for the 6'7 presence on the mound, but he has just a 1-5 record to show for it. His ERA is 5.40 to go with 40 strikeouts against 16 walks. In his last appearance, he pitched 6.1 innings, giving up two runs to the Guardians in a loss.

Dodgers Stay on Top of the West
The Los Angeles Dodgers are the reigning champions, and are looking to position themselves for another run in the postseason. They are currently at the top of the NL West with a 4.5 game lead over the Padres in second, with the Diamondbacks right behind with a 5.5 game deficit. The Dodgers have won six straight coming into Saturday, two against the Padres, three against the Rockies, and the first game of this series.
Justin Wrobleski had a strong showing on the mound on Friday, striking out nine and holding the Phillies to only two runs in the win. Their offense was all home runs, as their four runs came from four solo shots, one each from Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, and Will Smith. Muncy is tied for the team lead in home runs, as both he and Andy Pages have 13 on the year. Ohtani is still playing strong, but not quite on a path to MVP as he has 10 home runs, 31 RBIs and a .279 batting average.
Roki Sasaki will make his 10th start of the season as a 24-year old right hander. He has a 3-3 record to go with his 4.93 ERA, with a 43-18 strikeout to walk ratio. In his last start, Sasaki pitched five innings, giving up two runs in a win over the Brewers.
Phillies vs. Dodgers Picks and Predictions
Moneyline pick for Phillies vs. Dodgers
- Phillies (+109) (5 units)
The underdog is the play on Saturday night, though there is not much of a payout here as Vegas considers this to be a tight matchup, with the underdog Phillies listed at +109. The Dodgers scored on four solo home runs, that is not the most efficient way to score runs, and is difficult to repeat on the long run. The good news for Philadelphia, is their rookie pitcher on the mound has only given up a combined one home run over his past three starts, spanning over 17 innings. The Phillies need to start winning now to get their momentum back, and Saturday night provides a great price to back Philadelphia.
Take the Phillies to win.
Over/Under Pick for Phillies vs. Dodgers
- Over 8.5 (-108) (4 units)
The scoreboard was relatively low on Friday night, with only six combined runs between these two teams, and that came off five combined home runs. If the power hitters can stay this productive, it is likely more runs will fly up on to the board instead of seeing all solo shots. Painter does not give up a lot of homers, but he does give up a lot of runs with his 5.40 ERA. Sasaki is better, but not by much, as his ERA is up at 4.93. Expect some fireworks in Los Angeles in a high scoring game.
Take the over.
