Skenes Targets 11th Win of Season

Paul Skenes will be on the mound on Wednesday evening. Skenes resumed his dominance in his previous effort, pitching six scoreless innings against the Dodgers, and was credited with the win. The young ace is going to win another Cy Young. He has conceded two or fewer runs in all but five outings and has delivered a 1.98 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP, complemented by a 10-9 record in 173 innings of work on the year. Skenes has amassed 195 strikeouts. This is his first career meeting against the Orioles.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are near the end of another disappointing season. They have a young core but have not been able to break out. The squad has been competitive recently, winning three of their past six series. The Pirates swept the Dodgers at home last week. The momentum vanished after a series defeat in Milwaukee over the weekend.  They are horrendous on the road, posting a 22-47 road record.

Henry Davis was a #1 pick years ago, but has not panned out. The 25-year-old catcher only has 20 RBIs and a poor .524 OPS. Alexander Canario is a talented player who has not been able to break out. The 25-year-old has two RBIs this month and 18 RBIs in 75 games. Nick Yorke is getting his chance. The 23-year-old is one of their top prospects and was promoted from the minor leagues earlier this week. He has managed two RBIs and a .385 OPS in five games. Jared Triolo has two RBIs and a .650 OPS this month. The 27-year-old shortstop has issued 20 RBIs.

Pittsburgh is averaging 3.62 runs on the season, marking them 30th. The pitching is their strength, posting a 3.91 ERA, good for 15th.

Wells Seeks First Win of Season

Tyler Wells is on the mound for the second time of the season. Wells was sharp in his season debut, keeping San Diego to just two runs in five innings of work, and was awarded the win. The veteran only made three outings last year due to injury and made his season debut last week. Wells could be a key pitcher next season. Wells has a 4.04 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP, and a 17-18 record in his MLB career. He has kept the Pirates to just three runs with a 1-0 record in 12.1 career innings.

The Baltimore Orioles are enjoying a promising stretch. They swept the Padres and had another tough opponent in the Dodgers last weekend, and came away with two wins. The pitching kept the Dodgers to 10 runs in the series. The Orioles' season has been a disaster, but they were decimated by injuries. They could easily be a playoff squad next year. The group is 33-38 at home.

Gunnar Henderson has yet to record an RBI this month. The 24-year-old shortstop has 16 bombs with 61 RBIs and a .795 OPS on the year. Ryan Mountcastle has issued one RBI and a .623 OPS early this month. The veteran first baseman has 30 RBIs and a .673 OPS in 79 games. He recorded one RBI against the Pirates last season. Jeremiah Jackson has bashed two homers with three RBIS early this month. The 25-year-old rookie has been outstanding, recording 17 RBIs in 32 games. Jordan Westburg is on a rehab assignment and nearing his return within a week.

Baltimore is posting an average of 4.35 runs this year, rating them 15th. The pitching staff has issued a weak 4.65 ERA, ranking them 25th.

Spread Pick for Pirates vs. Orioles

  • Pittsburgh Pirates -140 (5 units)

The Pittsburgh Pirates have posted a competitive 5-5 record in their past 10 games. The Baltimore Orioles have been shaky at home, where they have dropped seven of their past ten games entering Tuesday.

Furthermore, this game is about Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes. The ace has stunning numbers and is enjoying a 1.95 ERA, which is #1. His latest masterpiece was six scoreless innings against the Dodgers. Skenes has conceded just three runs in his past 25 innings of work. The Pirates have won in five of Skenes’ past six outings. Orioles pitcher Tyler Wells is making just his second start of the season due to injury.

Over/Under Pick for Pirates vs. Orioles

  • Under 7.5 (5 units)

I expect this one to go under. Pittsburgh is the worst offensive team in the big leagues, ranking last in many categories, including runs and OPS. Pittsburgh has only scored 19 runs in its past five road games. Wells was sharp in his season debut last week, conceding two runs in five innings against San Diego.

In addition, the Orioles' pitching has been stingy recently, conceding just 16 runs in their past five games entering Tuesday, which occurred against potent offensive squads in San Diego and Los Angeles. Offensively, Baltimore has been kept in check at home, scoring only 12 runs in its past six home games. The under is a convincing 5-1 in the Pirates' past six road games.
