In this Giants at Cardinals prediction, the Giants and Cardinals wrap up their weekend series in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon. The Giants were all but out of the playoff hunt, but have quietly moved to within four games of the final wildcard spot in the NL. The Cardinals also ran out of steam in the summer heat and are hoping to avoid a losing record with three weeks left in the season. The pitching matchup on Sunday will feature Giants’ righty Kai-Wei Teng (2-3, 7.23) taking on veteran righty Sonny Gray (12-8, 4.43) of the Cardinals. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:15 PM EST. Giants haven’t folded just yet

The San Francisco Giants were written off as an also-ran after a rough July into August. Recently, however, the Giants have been playing winning baseball and, following their fifth straight win on Friday night against the Cardinals, have closed to within four games of the Padres in the wildcard standings. The Giants pulled out an 8-2 win on Friday night to improve to 72-69 on the season. The Giants banged out 18 hits in the victory, including back-to-back home runs from Rafael Devers and Willy Adames.

It may turn out to be too little and too late for the Giants, but they are playing with spirit down the stretch. They’ll try to keep the winning going on Sunday with righty Kai-Wei Teng on the bump. Teng is 2-3 on the season in five starts. He has allowed 23 hits in 18.2 innings of work, including just one home run. Teng has an ERA of 7.23 and a WHIP of 1.71. The Giants have lost three of Teng’s five starts this season. He is 1-2 on the road with an ERA of 6.75 in three starts.

Cardinals trying to avoid a losing season

The St. Louis Cardinals have 20 games left in the regular season entering play on Saturday night, and are two games below .500. The team was in the playoff chase into the heart of the summer but faded in August. They come into Saturday’s home game with the Giants, losers of three of their last five games. That includes an 8-2 loss to the Giants on Friday night. The Cardinals had just five hits in the game. Starting pitcher Michael McGreevy allowed nine hits and six runs in just four innings of work. He fell to 6-3 with the loss.

The Cardinals will try to slow down the red-hot Giants on Sunday in the series finale. They’ll try to do so with Sonny Gray on the hill. Gray is 12-8 on the season in 28 starts, including 12 quality starts. He has allowed 163 hits in 158.1 innings of work, including 23 home runs. Gray has an ERA of 4.43 and a WHIP of 1.23. He has walked just 31 batters and struck out 173. The Cardinals have lost three of Gray’s last five starts. He is 8-5 at home this season in 18 games with an ERA of 3.98.

Key Injuries: 1B Alec Burleson 1B, 2B Brendan Donovan, 1B Willson Contreras, and RP John King are out.

Giants vs. Cardinals Pick

Spread Pick for Giants vs. Cardinals

  • Giants ML (4 units)

The Giants are red-hot over the past ten games, hitting .336 as a team over that span. They face Cardinals’ righty Gray, coming off another rough start. Gray allowed 11 hits and seven runs in his last start, looking eerily similar to how he did in July when he compiled an ERA of 7.78 for the month, allowing 43 hits in just 26 innings of work. The Cardinals have also lost three of Gray’s last five starts. The Giants have found a way back into the playoff race and will need to keep on winning. They have played well on the road this season, three games over .500. The Cardinals are just 26-32 during the day this season. The Giants’ offense will rule the day on Sunday and keep on winning.

Take the Giants with the money line.

Over/Under Pick for Giants vs. Cardinals

  • Over  (4 units)

Hard to bet against the red-hot bats of the Giants not to continue producing on Sunday. As noted, they are hitting .336 as a team over the past ten games. They have also gone over the number in all five games of their win streak heading into Saturday’s matchup. The Giants have gone over the number in three of starter Teng’s last five starts. The Cardinals have gone over the total in three of Gray’s last five starts. They have also gone over the total in three of their last five games overall.

Take the over.
