San Francisco Trying to Stay Alive in Playoff Race

San Francisco snapped a four-game skid as they took down the Diamondbacks on the road in the finale Wednesday. The Giants entered Thursday 76-76 on the year and stood third in the NL West, nine games behind the Dodgers for the top spot. They were 2.5 games behind the Mets for the final wild card spot in the National League. Against the Diamondbacks Wednesday, San Francisco finished with five hits with no player having more than one. The Giants went four of eight with runners in scoring position and left three runners on base in the win. Justin Verlander threw seven shutout innings, allowing three hits with two walks and three strikeouts, but didnโ€™t factor in the decision. Joel Peguero (3-0) earned the win with two innings of relief, allowing one run (none earned) on no hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Robbie Ray takes the hill for the Giants as he makes his 32nd start of the season in this contest. He is 11-7 with a 3.50 ERA, a 1.205 WHIP, 71 walks and 181 strikeouts over 177.2 innings of work this season. Ray took the loss in his last start, which came against the Dodgers at home Sunday. He threw four innings, allowing five runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts in a game the Giants dropped 10-2. In his last three starts, Ray has a 1-1 record with a 7.24 ERA, a 1.68 WHIP, seven walks and 18 strikeouts over 13.2 innings of work. Freeman (his 21st) and Shohei Ohtani (his 51st) each went deep in the victory for the Dodgers. Blake Snell (5-4) earned the win as he threw seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts, before departing. Clayton Kershaw gets the ball for the Dodgers as he makes his 21st start of the season in this contest. He is 10-2 with a 3.53 ERA, a 1.216 WHIP, 30 walks and 71 strikeouts over 102 innings of work this season. Kershaw didnโ€™t factor in the decision in his last start, which came against the Giants on the road Saturday. He threw three innings, allowing four runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts in a game the Dodgers won 13-7. In his last three starts, Kershaw is 1-0 with a 6.59 ERA, a 1.61 WHIP, nine walks, and 13 strikeouts over 13.2 innings of work. Kershaw makes his 63rd career appearance, 61st start, against the Giants in this contest. He is 27-16 with a 2.08 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP, 74 walks, and 415 strikeouts over 407.1 innings of work. Kershaw is 117-42 with a 2.26 ERA, a 0.983 WHIP, 346 walks and 1,645 strikeouts over 1,475.1 innings in 227 career starts at Dodger Stadium.

Giants vs. Dodgers Pick

Moneyline Pick for Giants vs. Dodgers

  • Dodgers (4 units)

These teams met last weekend, with the Dodgers taking two of three. Ray was on a roll before getting roughed up by this Dodgers squad in his last start Sunday. That continued a troubling trend to five straight starts where he hasnโ€™t completed more than five innings. Kershaw has struggled a bit of late as well but we know how well he pitches at home, not to mention against the Giants, in his career. The Dodgers are a dangerous lineup, and they do a ton of damage at home. Look for Los Angeles to rough up Ray and the Giantsโ€™ bullpen to deliver a win, strengthening their hold on the NL West.

Over/Under Pick for Giants vs. Dodgers

  • Over (4 units)

San Francisco entered Thursday having stayed under the total in 74 of their 152 games, with six pushes, on the season. The Giants are 17th in the majors with 4.36 runs per game, a number that climbs to 4.61 runs per game on the road. San Francisco has an average total of 8.59 runs per game and that number climbs to 8.79 runs per game on the road this season. Los Angeles entered Thursday having seen the under post a 74-71-7 mark in their 152 games on the season. The Dodgers are 3rd in the majors as they average 5.12 runs a game, giving them an average total of 9.43 runs per contest. At home, Los Angeles averages 5.60 runs per game and has an average total of 10.03 runs per game this season. With both starters scuffling and the Dodgersโ€™ explosive lineup, take the over here.
